Duran resigned. Martinez will appoint a successor and there will be a special election next year.

Duran won by 3% as an incumbent in an off-year, so it'll probably be very competitive.

Now just to see who Martinez appoints.

Reminder that Maggie Toulouse Oliver, last year's failed dem nominee, said she'd consider running again if Duran resigned.

^ Oliver seems like she has a good career ahead of her. I imagine other Democrats should defer to her here.

With presidential turnout, Democrats will win this office.

Huh There are some very capable candidates for SoS that Martinez can appoint, and Democrats in New Mexico are utterly inept and terrible. I wouldn't trust any vague platitude like "With presidential turnout..." as an assurance that this office could be gained for Democrats.

Eh, Turkisblau, Democrats can win this race in a midterm. It was held by a Democrat for decades. It was on the same ballot section as State Auditor and Attorney General, which were both won easily by Democrats in 2014.  A Democrat will win in it 2016.

Duran only won because she was seen as anti-corruption candidate against Mary Herrera in 2010, who was one of the worst ever, and fulfilled those promises reasonably well.

The real solution here is a constitutional amendment to get rid of the NM Secretary of State altogether and delegate the office's powers among several. This is the fourth consecutive SoS to have her career end with criminal charges--3 Democrats, 1 Republican.  And I'm guessing it's only been four because the prior ones were good at covering up similar practices.

Duran only won very narrowly in 2014, which was a Republican year, so do the math. In a blue state with presidential turnout Democrats usually win. It isn't "a vague platitude" (whatever that is).
