Wait, a republican fan of Jeb Bush thinks that he's Ronald Reagan .2.

I swear every republican nominee since 1988 has claimed to be Ronald Reagan

In Britain, is Margaret Thatcher venerated among Conservatives to the same extent that Ronald Reagan is among Republicans in the USA?

Also, is there anyone with similar folk-hero status in the Labour or LibDem parties? (insert Jeremy Thorpe joke here)

Well yes, she is treated with somewhat creepy idolisation, but it would be unwise to base your election campaign around her name. Too much baggage is associated with her rule, and it runs counter to the more "modern Tory" label of the Cameronites.

Attlee is the venerated Labour figure.

Rather than basing these on the candidates' policies, I decided to go with the presidents I felt best matched their personalities.

Hillary Clinton: James Madison
(Skilled politician; struggles to connect with the voters on a personal level)

Bernie Sanders: John Adams
(Shaky relations with his party's establishment; stubborn insistence in following his own moral compass regardless of the political consequences)

Marco Rubio: John F. Kennedy
(Youthful rising star in his party; careful not to offend the base, sometimes at the expense of taking a strong stand on the issues [Civil Rights for Kennedy; immigration for Rubio])

Ted Cruz: Lyndon B. Johnson
(A political strategist at heart; arrogant)

Rand Paul: John Q. Adams
(Has a set of firmly held beliefs and sticks to them; no lack of fire; sidelined by an opponent [Jackson for JQA; Trump for RP] who is much more willing to run on his personality)

Donald Trump: Andrew Jackson
(Brash populist appeal; casts himself as the candidate of the "common man"; avoids talking about the issues whenever possible)

Only doing the serious candidates.

Hillary Clinton: Richard Nixon - Long career in national politics, introverted, reviled by media, perceived as untrustworthy, divisive, mistrusted by the base of their party

Bernie Sanders: John Adams - What Harry Truman said.

Jeb Bush: George H.W. Bush - More similar to his dad than brother - introspective, thoughtful, disliked by conservative base

Scott Walker: Ronald Reagan - Background as conservative governor of a liberal state, and Walker behaves like he's running for president in 1980.

Marco Rubio: George W. Bush - Neocon, able to unite both the base and the establishment

Donald Trump: Andrew Jackson - Loud, vitriolic, generally doesn't adhere to the rules of politics

John Kasich: Dwight D. Eisenhower - Moderate Republican with potential for building national consensus

Hillary Clinton - John F Kennedy (She has an ambitious agenda, but the current state of government isn't conducive to getting big legislation through, and thus her administration is known for its behind-the-scenes decisions and strategic changes in US foreign policy, rather than sweeping legislation)
Bernie Sanders - Barack Obama (That whole hopey-changey thing, and again probably not great at getting significant legislation through congress)
Lincoln Chafee - John Tyler (Why is this guy president again? Makes decisions completely out-of-step with his party's elite)
Joe Biden - Bill Clinton (Likable, and probably gets high approval ratings, but often fails to see the broader picture, and much of the actual legislation that comes through ends up getting re-written or repealed a few decades later)

Donald Trump - George W. Bush (Completely ruins US foreign relations for years, might actually get legislation through, but much of it is dramatically flawed and replaced during the next administration)
Jeb Bush - Gerald Ford (Pretty blah, but doesn't do all that much damage. Stuck with burdensome legacy)
Ted Cruz - John Adams (Inspiring lawyer who completely ignores the Constitution while in office to further his agenda and sideline his opponents)
Chris Christie - Richard Nixon (Probably wouldn't be all that bad policy-wise, but is generally surrounded by a veil of corruption and appoints a terrible cabinet)
Rand Paul - Ronald Reagan (Adored by his base but reviled by his enemies, he significantly changes the direction of the Republican party)

Two points:

1) I'm flattered you think I'm influential enough that comparing Hillary to JFK on Atlas will get me political favor with her.

2) I agree that Hillary and Nixon are comparable in a lot of areas, particularly foreign policy. I actually considered putting Nixon for her, but I thought he'd be a better match for Chris Christie. Plus the hierarchy of corruption is clearly Nixon>Christie>Hillary.
