The Richard Nixon Twitter page is awesome and surprisingly informative and insightful. The admin is an adamant Kasich supporter, and more than a few people in the page's circle have theorized that Trump and Jeb going after each other will eventually hurt each other so badly that they will both become weak and drop out. The establishment, desperate to fend off the loons, turns to Kasich, who is a fresh canvas to paint nationally. Is this a reasonable prediction?

What Kasich has for himself is that he can sound more reasonable and mature than his rivals for the nomination. So it's not impossible he can use both Bush and Trump as stepping stones to the nomination if he wanted to in order to secure a victory.

If Kasich gets too high in the polls, Trump will blame for for destroying the global economy in 2008 as a senior executive at the Lehman Brothers. Boom!

Trump is one of the things that's working well for Kasich.

The other is the way Jeb Bush is floundering.

Kasich's relatively obscure, but he's in a solid second place in New Hampshire right now. That can very well be enough to make him the establishment alternative to Trump, especially with Carson and Cruz in the top three in Iowa.

According to PPP he is trailing Trump by 24 points and only ahead of Fiorina by 1. Not exactly "solid".
