We were where the first colonizers of the land formerly known as America landed.

>cough<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown,_Virginia>cough<

Nevertheless, the governor is correct: the fate of the Northeast is intertwined with that of Atlasia. The departure of the Northeast would effectively kill the Republic of Atlasia (which, admittedly, is what some proponents of independence want) - in one fell swoop, the President, Vice President, Secretary of Federal Elections, the Secretary of Home Affairs, 1/5 of the Senate, and 1/3 of the Supreme Court, not to mention the chair of the fourth-largest political party. Nor is it certain that the Northeast would survive the split - as Pikachu rightly notes, the economy of this great region is thoroughly interconnected with markets in her sister Regions, and several of the most active Northeasterners (Pikachu, Rpryor, Blair, etc.) oppose independence, suggesting that they would be disinclined to remain active if the split is made. As it is, the Northeast has a near-monopoly of the executive branch and is the only region overrepresented in the Con-Con. Northeast independence makes about as much sense as England seceding from the UK: you have little to gain and everything to loose.

no no no your region doesn't get it either Grin

puerto rico was colonised a century before either of those. and if you don't want to count that, st. augustine, florida is quite a bit older as well. (not to mention all the colonizers who landed and then left again, or died)

True, but Virginia joined the Union before Florida and Puerto Rico, so we're still the oldest of the original state.

The firsts three to join were Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, meaning the United States (Atlasia's predecessor) started in the Northeast.

But Virginians drafted the Declaration of Independence, commanded the Continental Army, and presided over the Constitutional Convention. Plus, we have more Civil War battlefields. Wink

I would argue that the U.S. began with the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution. Regardless, I think we can agree that both of our Regions have their fair share of historical landmarks. Smiley

It was pretty humiliating personally, but the Northeast did get the candidate it wanted as Senator. Also, our regional Senator is in line with the ideological consensus of the Senate at the moment, and we also supported bore in his reelection efforts. There's really no reason to think that the Northeast will be governed in any more an interesting or radical fashion if we go independent since we already reflect Atlasia pretty well at the moment. On another note, out of the two interesting races going on in the Northeast, one of them would likely not happen in an independent Northeast because it's for the Atlasian federal government.

As someone who was born in Pennsylvania and raised in both Pennsylvania and upstate New York, it would break my heart to see them leave this union.

The Common Good: A case for a United Atlasia

1- Federal Programs.

Independence would mean that Federal Programs, and Federal Dollars would no longer flow into the Northeast. These programs are vital for the Northeast, and no plan has been set up about how to cover the costs of a full Federal withdrawal. What would be lost?

-A $7.4 billion scheme to provide HIV/AIDs protection to the Atlasians.
-A $5 billion scheme to provide LegalAid to poor Atlasians
-A $300 million Civil rights Act
-A £300 million infrastructure protection bill to limit the impacts of Climate Change.
-A £600 million grant program for rural transport.

2. International Influence.

The out campaign make several suggestions about how the Northeast would remain part of the International community. Most of this is based on the assumption that the Northeast can just slide onto the International stage, this is simply a mistake.

-The Northeast would be unable to join NATO, not only would their be widespread objections from nations like Spain but also NATO reject members who have territorial issues with another member.

-The Northeast would be unable to take part in the historic Paris Climate Summit, which is set to lay down the largest global climate agreement. As part of Atlasia we'd be one of the most powerful voices-as the Northeast we won't even be invited.

-The Northeast would lose the international influence that comes from being part of, frankly one of the most powerful nations on the earth. The seat on the security council, the international prestige, the trade deals and the international brand would all be lost.

3- Defence and Security-

The out campaign claim that we'd be safe in an independent Northeast. As a former Senator and current Cabinet member I'd have to question this claim. Not only would we lose access to the immensely powerful Atlasian Army but we'd also lose access to the Ships, Special forces, Aircraft, Drones and other specialist equipment that protects us. As said above, not only would we be denied entry into NATO but the Northeast would be a shadow of it's former self

4- The Future?

What would an independent Northeast look like? That's the problem-nobody knows. The system of governance has only been vaguely outlined by the NNP, and no formal recognition has come from the Federal Government. It seems absurd for the Northeast to literally negotiate away our future whilst a New President comes to power, and whilst the ConCon tries to carve out a new future for Atlasia. Federal office holders would be forced to move regions, players with ties to Atlasia would be tempted to leave and uncertainty would hang over our game. Do we really just want to be an irrelevant sub forum board?

Question Mr. Blair.

Why is the scheme to provide HIV/AIDs protection, pegged at $7.4 billion?

I can understand this having a budget, but really, $7.4 billion?

There surely must be some more pressing items and concerns than spending so much of the budget on this?

The day before the election, Senator Pryor hosted a joint rally with Northeasterners For A United Atlasia at the Independence Mall in Philadelphia. The following is a transcript of his remarks.

"Hello! It's wonderful to be here with you today. Now I must admit, a personal favorite piece of art of mine was made by a great Northeasterner. In 1754, Benjamin Franklin published a political cartoon saying 'Join, or Die.'  He knew that we had to join together to survive. That message still rings true today.  If the Northeast leaves, what will that do to Atlasia? Some of its most active citizens are Northeasterners and oppose succession. Myself. Altsomn. ClarkKent. Winfield. RGN. Pikachu. Blair. Our secretary of federal elections, Homelycooking. Our President, Bore. Atlasia loses all these people that are so important to its functioning. We must join, or both Atlasia and this new country of the Northeast will be in deep trouble. Let's save Atlasia and keep the Northeast in Atlasia!

Things are looking good at the moment, but the lead is narrow, and our victory is in no way secured. So if you're a unionist who has voted yet, I strongly urge you to get to the voting booth and help keep the Northeast where it belongs.

'Friends it looks like we've done. Together as a region we've banded together and made the case for a strong and united Northeast. I'd like to thank Governor Pikachu for leading the campaign, and for taking the case to the public in the debates. I'd like to thank every one who voted in the Northeast for independence, and for figures across the political spectrum, from across Atlasia who made the case for a United Atlasia. Mark my words we've send a powerful message-the Northeast is United.

I'd like to send my condolences to Clyde, who's lead a positive and energetic campaign for the Northeast. He's been a fine public servant, and has always kept the campaign positive. I say to everyone in the Northeast who voted for Independence that the journey doesn't end now-we still need you to fight for the Northeast, to ensure that we get a fair deal at the Constitutional Convention. I'm certain we're going to see great things happen in the Northeast over the next couple of months-this is a time for optimism'

CLASSIC CONSERVATIVE ADDRESSES NUA CROWD

My fellow Atlasians, here and at home you just listened to one of the Northeast's finest and the man who I hope is your next governor, Blair. He brought forth a message of hope in these tough times for our great nation and your great region. As a man who grew up just North of Boston, the Northeast is my ancestral home since my forefathers landed here in 1620, starting a path and creating the New World. Atlasia is at a turning point we are at a time when our country needs help or we will risk extinction like the Roman Empire and the United States. History at one time will repeat itself but you stopped it from repeating today. Atlasia will stay intact my friends, we will be united forever the union will be preserved, but I address this to the man who was sick and tired of the same old whining and do nothing of politicans up in Nyman. I thank my friends in the NNP and other supporters of Northeast Independence for a vibrant and peaceful campaign, I urge you to ask me any questions about my positions with regards to the Constitutional Convention, which I'm proud to be a delegate on and I urge you to not give up hope my Atlasians, and trust us beacuse all of us whether we are NNPers or Federalists like myself beacuse we all have one goal in common to Make Atlasia Great Once Again!!!  Thank You and God Bless the Northeast!!! Union Forever!!!

You of all people should know that I'm never fully out, my friend. I still chair one of the larger Atlasian parties, and i have a wealt of experience across the board. I'll find something to do around here. The Nationalist movement may have won this battle, but we will win the war. In the words of one of the greatest Governors of California, "I'll Be Back."

So I'd like to give out some thanks first. I'd like to thank all the people of the Northeast who voted today. Not just those voted no, but the supporters of independence too. You've brought up an interesting question and an added another dynamic to what is already the most interesting region in Atlasia. I'd like to thank everyone who took part in the effort to keep this country together. We truly had a group of some of the greatest Atlasians in this campaign, and without all of you, victory wouldn't have been possible. Finally, I'd specifically like to thank Clyde, my counterpart in this, for keeping things civil even when things got intense. I know that can be tough sometimes, but he ran a good campaign. That'll be all for now, but I look forward to continued future of Atlasian unity and Northeastern success.
