Remember how the media convinced a large percentage of Americans that a centrist (at best) candidate such as Barack Obama was a radical socialist (Glenn Beck even used the term "Marxist"). Well, Bernie is actually an admitted socialist, and I am concerned that if he is the Democratic nominee, the media will destroy him. If he were to get elected, the GOP has gerrymandered a firm control on the House of Representatives until at least 2020. That being the case, is it likely that Sanders choosing a moderate, some would say conservative, Democrat, such as Joe Manchin as VP/Senate President would break gridlock. Manchin is known as a bipartisan compromiser, and was able to bring together Democrats and Republicans to consider a bill mandating universal background checks in 2013 (although it failed by a few votes). Additionally, Manchin would likely bring a favorite son effect to the race because polls show that he remains popular in WV, unlike Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in their respective states (both lost their home states in 2012). Not only is Joe Manchin not a socialist (although he is a populist, and has stood against free trade deals), he appeals to blue-collar, white males that the Democratic Party has been losing over the years. Jim Webb is likewise a populist from Virginia, but Webb doesn't have Manchin's charisma.

I do support Bernie. It is not bad that he admits to being a socialist. I am just concerned that the media will attack him for that; it doesn't mean that I think they should.

Not socialist, but democratic socialist. Like the UK Labour Party.

No, for the same reason a Paul/Santorum ticket would be terrible. Balancing the ticket makes sense until you cross a line where it's basically someone who's only in the same party as you because we (sadly) only have two electable parties. Manchin would scare away some (not all, but some) lefties who would otherwise vote for Bernie, and most of the people you're talking about wouldn't vote for Sanders even if he picks Manchin. Bernie's never going to win West Virginia, either, even if he picks Jesus as VP.

Oh, and Obama isn't a centrist anymore than Sanders' is a communist, Trump is a fascist, or Ron Paul is an anarchist. Don't be silly.

True. A lot of the general election is based off of increasing voter turnout with the base, and Sanders can't do that if he has an MM (Meh Moderate) as his running mate.
