Though the Stimulus Act of 1986, passed by Congressional centrists in both parties and reluctantly signed by President Crane, would alleviate some of the stresses on the national economy, unemployment and income inequality remain troublingly high, with nearly 6% of the nation out of work. This state of affairs has not reflected well on President Crane, who has also been criticized for his controversial efforts to contain the spread of Communism in Central America and the Middle East.

The American Party is split four ways in advance of the 1988 Primary election. Front runner for the nomination is former Secretary of State Sandra Day O'Connor, a respected diplomat and former Senator from Arizona. O'Connor is opposed by Connecticut Senator Barbara Bush, an advocate for education reform; evangelist Pat Robertson; and Nevada Senator Paul Laxalt. The Populist field is similarly crowded, with the most prominent candidates being Senator Al Gore, who has called for new environmental regulations and a more "honest" foreign policy; Senator Gary Hart, who argues that the People's Party needs to move towards the political center; Speaker of the House Dick Gephardt, who cites his party's victory in the 1986 midterms as evidence of his ability to rebuild the Populist coalition; Governor Mario Cuomo, whose tenure as New York's chief executive has made him a hero of liberal activists; and AFL-CIO President Ross Perot, arguably the most left-wing candidate in the field, who has called for new protections for organized labor and increased funding for education, urban housing, infrastructure, and national social welfare programs.

The choice is yours.

Although I must say I'd be very interested in a Sandra Day O'Connor Presidency, as I have a lot of respect for her as a SC justice.

You realize this is Robertson, not Buchanan, right?

Oh, and I'd be okay with any combination of a populist ticket with Cuomo and Perot. I'd prefer Cuomo/Perot, but Perot/Cuomo would also be great.

Would love an O'Connor vs. Perot election. Didn't realize Perot was running when I voted, so I went O'Connor.
