And he's attacking him from the left... on immigration. Oh my god, is Ben Carson trying to be strategic here: I really feel like Trump attacking him could potentially look like bullying. I'm wondering if this could backfire on the Trumpster for some reason.

I think that is what Carson is trying to do, force Trump's hand because a blowhard attacking a calm man will be seen as crazy and bullying.

I don't think Trump will attack Carson over this.

First, this was not an attack. Carson pointed out the differences between him and Trump. These differences were tailored to his audience - the evangelicals.
Unless he can underline differences between him and Trump, he runs the risk of becoming the same as Trump, just softer and lose support.

Trump will continue to relentlessly attack the establishment candidates and keep his good relationship with Carson. After all, Carson still isn't ruling out a Trump/Carson ticket.

Trump will attack him. Trump is one of the most thin skinned individuals imaginable. Questioning his faith will likely cause Trump to go full offense against Carson.

Possibly.  Carson is a neophyte, politically, but well thought of, and, like Trump (but unlike Jeb!, Walker, Rubio, Christie, Santorum, Gilmore, Pataki, and a few others) has actually done BIG THINGS OUTSIDE OF POLITICS.  People like an aggressor, but Carson's kind of on the same anti-establishment team Trump is leading.

Donald Trump is a bad christian with little faith. I am not a religious person, nor am I christian, but one doesn't have to go to temple/church often to be a good person or to have faith. We all sin, Trump has sinned more than many. He lies, cheats, and insults on a regular basis - he is a bad man, Carson is now owning him, and I've gained respect for Carson.
