I believe that the six counties of Ulster should remain part of the United Kingdom. No one disputes that the British used deplorable means to annex Ireland, but they did this at a time when no clear procedure existed under international law to return such lands to their prior owners. For this reason, the British annexation is legally legitimate. Also, Protestants are the numerical majority in Northern Ireland. As a matter of popular sovereignty, it seems logical to continue the current status. I think the area is far better served to stay with the United Kingdom than become part of the backward and shameful political culture of Ireland.
