I read that he said "I have nothing left in the tank." New Zealand is one of those countries that I only vaguely follow at election time and otherwise ignore, but I'd assume (unless there is a reason that I'm completely ignorant of) that he probably got offered a really plushy private sector job as an international lobbyist and professional corporate board member.

Maybe he's about to get ensnared in some sort of sex scandal? Pulling too many pony tails?

Apparently it seems it was his wife who urged him to resign.

Very weird.

"family reasons", huh? Judging from the American experience, that tends to mean a horrific scandal is coming, so I wonder why he's really resigning.

Throughout his eight-year premiership not a single poll has shown the National Party behind in voting intentions (unless Wikipedia has missed some out). Must be some kind of record for a developed country.

Family reasons usually involve big money coming into the picture. His wife is probably tired of the public role and wants him to get a nice job in the corporate world so they can rest on their laurels for the next 30 years of their life.

Isn't Key pretty rich already though? His net worth is something like NZ$ 50 million.

He's always seemed like a good guy, far better than Howard and Abbott and the same as Turnbull and Rudd.

I'm comparing him to Aussie PMs because the only other New Zealand one I know is Helen Clark.
