Poor judgement on the kids' part compounded by stupid zero tolerance policies on the school's part. They were right to investigate, but once it was clear what it was the school should have left it there.

People eventually need to realize that this is more than just racism or discrimination, its also zero tolerance policies that are making our schools go to sh**t and punishing actions that are inconceivable to punish because we have fear so built up that it makes our judgments irrational. Hopefully justice is served.

It's the fact that Muslims face an absolutely awful situation in America where they're attacked, scapegoated and ridiculed by idiots who don't even understand what's going on. You've got Presidential candidates saying that Muslims can't be Presidents, you've had this insane nudge nudge that Obama must be a Muslim and thus unfit for office 

Alright calm down.. You dont understand the situation of Muslims in this country at all. They are not being attacked. They've been more successful than almost any other immigrant group in America. They have high incomes, good jobs, and live in integrated neighborhoods at a way higher rate than many others in America. This ridiculous attempt to turn them into another persecuted minority is so far from the truth

A self-selecting group of Twitter comments about incidents over a decade old are not remotely a good piece of evidence.

I don't doubt that they faced a good deal of ugliness at times and the current rhetoric by the likes of Carson and Trump is deeply irresponsible, but the hate crime statistics simply don't back up any sort of anti-Muslim epidemic.

Ahmed wasn't "arrested as a terrorist". He was arrested for supposedly causing a disruption at school. Which he shouldn't have been, but let's not let the facts get any more muddled here. This was a minor local law enforcement affair.

He was a bright middle school kid who brought a homemade clock to school to impreess a teacher. Yes, undoubtedy occasionally absurd zero tolerance school policies had a role to play, but anyone who believes for a second he would've been arrested if he was a white Methodist boy is deluding themselves.

Whathe was arrested for was bringing a (fantastically imagined) suspicion of bringing a bomb to blow up his school. "bomb + Muslim = terrorist" as many Americans will tell you, including repeatedly mayor of that city.

this was an attack of blatant Islamophobia, but it hit a telegenic middle class kid and proved an embarrassment

The actual charge was a "fake bomb scare".

Of course this happened because he's Muslim. No one's really disputing this. But the way people are talking, you'd think the FBI swept in and subjected him to enhanced interrogation.

This story has never been more than background noise for me, but can anyone explain how the, uh, twist ending doesn't throw a pall over the entire matter? Is this just a case of someone's 15 minutes having gone terribly awry?

For the same reason people still cite Joseph Stack as "right-wing terror" despite his suicide note quoting the Communist creed adoringly.
