The magazine Vanity Fair is wondering why Democrats don't pressure to draft Jerry Brown for president. He can be a formidable candidate, in my opinion.

If he was 10 or so years younger, then maybe.

What's the realistic deadline for a late entry?

I think sometime in October or November is the last time most states will accept having you on their primary ballots.

Nope. The first significant filing deadline for dems is NH on Nov. 20. SC and most of Super Tuesday is later. Caucuses only require that you are a candidate 10 days before the caucus.

In human years maybe, but Brown has positive shakra from meditation so he ages ten times slower. Jerry is actually just reaching his adolescence at the moment; you don't even want to know his final form.

There are a lot worse picks for President from both parties I can think of.

If he was just 10 years younger, I think he'd be Hillary's main competition for the nomination. As it is, he's too old.

I'd love to see Jerry Brown as President, but quite honestly I'd feel betrayed if he abandoned California for the White House.

2004 was when a Obama or Clinton wasnt on the ballot. And Kerry won the nomination. Barring that, there's no reason for him to run against Hilary.

If he wanted to run, he'd have Newsom run and then emerge as a compromise at a brokered convention or replace the less popular Newsom towards the end of a heavily contested primary fight.

It's the only way he could run at his age.

I'm glad somebody brought up Gavin Newsom.

He's our current Lt. Gov. and will become California's 40th Governor in 2018. I guarantee that Brown is mentoring this man to run in 2024.

I dunno, there's other contenders that could become Governor over Newsom. John Chiang for example.

2020 maybe?

Newsom is nearly as smart as Brown and somehow even more intelligent. I could see Newsom being the keynote speaker or, somehow, a compromise candidate at a brokered convention. Newsom is extremely intelligent, but I seem to recall he was dyslexic.

You're Californinian. Is he a moderate, along the lines of Deval Patrick or Andrew Cuomo? Libertarian, like Brown? Or Biden-esque? Honestly, as a Republican, do you like him?

To be honest, he's an up-and-comer IMO.

Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris should both run. They'd be excellent candidates.

He's very similar to Gov. Brown politically. In terms of style, he does have a quality about him that's very similar to Obama in the way he speaks and handles himself. I generally like him and if he ran in 2024 and the Republican Party is pushing for George P. Bush or Ted Cruz for President, then I'd vote for Newsom. Brown and his administration have done a good job getting California's economy growing again while pushing us towards budget surpluses, which is an impressive accomplishment. Brown's current approval rating is 59% for good reason.

Newsom is a dumbass for opposing HSR. I abstained rather than vote for him last November.
