What is it with all these medical doctors who are Tea Party activists?

Well, there's perhaps no better demographic to think of itself as the "deserving" rich.  They put in years of all-nighters to earn top marks, gave up ~10 years of their youth to rigorous advanced education, and took on several $100K of debt to make it happen.  Now, in their 30's and 40's, they earn 5-10X the US median income doing something that unambiguously adds value to society, but due to e.g. $250K educational debt, they certainly don't feel like media depictions of the rich.  They are also prone to interact with underprivileged groups in a way that reinforces negative stereotypes about them.  They also know that in other advanced countries with government-funded health care, physicians only make 1.5-3X the median income, so they have an extremely strong interest in opposing any more government involvement in medicine.  Is it any wonder that many physicians would conclude that life is mostly fair and they are the meritocratic elite?
