Yikes. I'm a car guy - most of the writerss of the magazines I read have been suckers for VW products lately, too.

RIP Third Reich.  Pretty soon I'll no longer be able to drink Fanta.

It's a general assumption that most other car makers are probably doing similar things. So, the question is whether the scandal will widen to other companies.

Volkswagen will probably not go bankrupt. The state of Lower Saxony owns 20% in VW shares and if push comes to shove there's gonna be a bailout. There's a lot of speculation that Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is going to resign though.

Is really upends a lot of German automakers heavy investment in selling "clean diesel" to America, (which has largely shunned the fuel for passenger cars) once EPA restrictions on fuel efficiency put pressure on petrol.

Winterkorn is dead man walking. The regulators are really going to get their knives out - this isn't laziness or poor communication, like what normally occurs in this sort of corporate kerfluffle; this was a blatant conspiracy to defraud the regulators and their customers.

In Germany, Volkswagen has managed to push the refugee crisis from the headlines. Tongue Refugees are only no. 2 now.

I sure hope you're right. Corporations shouldn't be able to get away with sh*t like this.

The best part of this scandal is the total mockery it makes of libertarian collective truths, especially

"Companies do a good job in regulating themselves"

and

"Product labels provide complete information that allows buyers to make informed choices"

and

"The isolated consumer is capable of identifying shoddy products or fraudulent transactions" (what he/she can do about either is left for debate).

After the Philip Morris debacle, one would assume that no company (outside of China) would intentionally commit fraud knowing how steep the punishments will be when discovered. But I suppose the profit motive overwhelms even that scruple.

The New England Patriots defense.  "everybody is doing it!, why you looking at me!?"

That's not a defense... if other companies doing the same - which very well may be the case - it should and must be revealed as well. If only Volkswagen gets punished, nothing is going to change.

Anyway, the German Bundestag is debating the Volkswagen scandal tomorrow. The Greens have accused transportation minister Alexander Dobrindt of having been aware of the practice for quite some time now, Dobrindt naturally denied it. So much for the political fallout.

Libertarians are against environmental regulations in the first place.
