Good list, I'd put Hamill in place of The Emperor in Return....it's got my favorite Luke/Vader scene, and not the fight.  It's when Luke surrenders and he and Vader are walking down a hallway talking.

My favorite seen is when The Emperor is seducing Luke to the dark side which makes luke use the force to grab his lightsaber to attack him which leads to the Vader/Luke battle.

To be honest, I'm really bad at assessing acting quality. I mean, I can tell the difference between Patrick Stewart and Tommy Wiseau, but I'm not comfortable making precise judgments on acting as I do for writing. I also tend to attach more importance to the latter when considering a movie as a whole.

Fair enough, but a good or entertaining acting performance goes a long way to save a bad line

Using Star Wars, while this is a trite and cliche line, the way Natalie Portman emotes it still makes it appropriately sad:   I am talking about of course "Anakin, you're breaking my heart"

And a good or serviceable line can be hampered if the actor comes off as wooden or too far over-the-top, the former is what lines given to Mace Windu become. I mean just imagine how this line could've come off if Sam Jackson's signature style was used. "You are under arrest,...my lord". Goodness, it'd probably be something like "You are UNDER AR-REST Jedif*&(!", definitely more appropriate for the scene.

I'm not denying that. I actually need to watch those Star Wars prequel movies in their original English version some day, to see for myself if the acting and writing is as mad as some people make it out to be. It definitely didn't seem so when I saw them in Italian or French (though some moments did seem a bit goofy).

Pretty corny, but not really out of place with the series' spirit. Even the old trilogy had its over-the-top moments.

I agree with the OP. And, to go further, I think Ian McDiarmid's performance in Episode III is probably the best across all six films. Fwiw, I don't share the hatred of the prequel like so many, though I still think Episode III is as strong as anything from the original trilogy. As far as my favourite movies among the six, Revenge of the Sith ranks only behind Empire Strikes Back.

Darth Vader stole every scene he's in. Truly one of the greatest villains in cinema history.

Other than Alec Guiness, Peter Cushing, and James Earl Jones' voice acting, I don't think there were any performances in the Star Wars movies that were particularly good (a few others were okay, but there's a reason we don't remember the series for the acting).

Alec Guinness phoning in (as he did - to the extent that he could - for these films) was better than most decent actors trying their hardest. He would have disagreed of course: crippling low self esteem.

OK, I know this forum is rather neurodiverse, but nobody picking Harrison Ford for any movie (particularly Empire) is a bit too much.

Considering Billy Dee Williams did nearly the same role, and with even more charisma and ease, no, not really.
