If he had seriously wanted to be a "patriot", Boehner would have done everything possible (as would have Mitch McConnell) to marshal as many GOP votes as possible and joined with reasonable Democrats to prevent any and all Govt. shutdowns. He then should have formed a coalition of reasonable Republicans and reasonable Democrats, reorganized the House, and dealt with issues reasonably.
Instead, Boehner allowed the Govt. shutdown to occur. He did it so he could keep his job and his power. Twice.
John Boehner was in a position to have been a true Profile in Courage. He ended up to be just another politician. It's too bad. He could have done more to end the poisonous partisanship than anyone in Washington, and he punted because he was afraid of being dumped, or being primaried. Really too bad.
