On the short run this most likely means that there will be no shutdown.  Boehner will just ignore the Hastert Rule and make deals with Dem before he leaves.

Raul Labrador or as said above, Trey Gowdy. That's it potentially.

From Twitter, it sounds like Tom Price will challenge Scalise for Majority Leader.  (And what about Cathy McMorris Rodgers?  Will she go for it?)

No indication of anyone challenging McCarthy for Speaker so far, from what I've seen.

I'm honestly stunned and in a bit of disbelief. I never actually expected his resignation. If he was going to go as Speaker, I always thought it would be through his own voluntary retirement ahead of time or Democrats retaking the House.

Welp, guess you have to put at least an outside chance of Ds taking the House now, up odds of D POTUS, senate considerably.

@SeanTrende
I think conservatives have no clue how bad the Boehner resignation is for them.

@SeanTrende
Given the mess likely to ensue, Rs *really* could use a governor nominee. Guess what? Their best bet just dropped out.

Um. what?
How the hell is Boehner's resignation going to influence so drastically the presidential race? I bet most people won't even notice the change at the helm of the House.
I've said in the past that Trende is a charlatan and today he just confirmed it.

I imagine he's predicting that crazies will take over the House.

That really does not make much sense. Presumably Trende will elaborate. Personally I think McCarthy will be more skilled in herding that bunch of feral cats also known as House Pubs.

That's interesting. I always remember the term "herding cats" being referenced to Democrats. The parties are really quite opposites in that aspect now.

If anything keeps McCarthy out of the Speaker's chair, I think it could be presidential politics. I'll bet each candidate will at least specify their preferred successor. If you get Donald Trump and Ben Carson (let alone Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, etc) to start railing against McCarthy, the fury from the base could derail him. The bigger issue is as to who the base can rally around in opposition.

Oh I don't think most House Pubs care too much about what the candidates want. It's much more personal than that.

In an objective/non-partisan take, Boehner was one of the worse Speakers in history. How many times did he take a vote to the floor only to lose because they didn't have the count right? The man was just bad at his job.

Yes, he really was a failure of epic proportions.

LOL, how is Boehner "crazy"?  Or at least any "crazier" than Pelosi.

I would ordinarily agree, but the angry base knows how to phone their Member of Congress. I've truly been surprised by how much that matters some times. If they start going on the campaign trail and start riling things up, things could change quickly. Boehner's office even mentioned Cantor's defeat. He is afraid and the Republican Establishment is afraid. They will have to tread very carefully. McCarthy is basically invincible in his own seat (mostly due to California's top-two system), but he's not invincible in holding a leadership spot. It may not make a difference in the end, but I think Republican candidates representing upwards of 70-75% could be in public opposition to what will be declared a coronation. The Republican base will be even more livid than they already are.

If the crazies weren't already running the House then Boehner would have remained Speaker.

I actually hope so.

It's not like anything would get by Obama anyhow, and it would greatly improve the Dems' chances of winning the House in '16 (it would probably improve Dem chances for the Senate and Presidency as well, TBH).

It'll probably be McCarthy. He won't be worse than Boehner, and he may be slightly better.

No news about a challenge to McCarthy, but Scalise, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Tom Price, and possibly Pete Sessions look like they're running for the #2 slot. Markwayne Mullen, Patrick McHenry, and possibly Peter Roskam for #3.

If the Tea Party can consolidate behind a single candidate (unlikely) and both McCarthy and McMorris-Rogers run, I can see an upset. But it will take a serious divide in the establishment vote to pull it off. The number of self-identified Tea Partiers has shrunk considerably since 2011. Any ideas who could be a uniting Tea Party figure? I've seen Gowdy and Labrador as suggestions. Maybe Bill Flores?

Even if they do consolidate there is very little chance they win. Tea partiers are still a minority in the Republican caucus.

It's probably for the best. I like McCarthy more, even if he is a (and heavy emphasis on the quotations) "RINO." He's both more conservative AND more articulate than Boehner, so the only reason the Tea Party hates him is because he is not a wingbat. I'd also love Paul Ryan or Raul Labrador, but McCarthy will be a great Speaker.
