Massive FF. Sarah (and Abraham, and even God, but especially Sarah) constantly shat on her even though the whole situation was Sarah's idea in the first place, she's the only woman in the Hebrew Bible to get the your-descendants-will-be-a-great-nation promise made to her, and she's the only person in the Hebrew Bible to give a name to God. I had a whole lecture on her yesterday and it was one of the most interesting hours-and-a-half of my life.

It's undeniably unseemly in a wow-Bronze-Age-childrearing-was-the-worst sort of way that she leaves Ishmael under a bush and goes off to cry about how bad things are for him, but the rabbinical explanation for that is that she didn't want to upset him even more by openly wailing right in front of him, and I can buy that.

Displays too little of her own agency for us to get a good sense of her personality.

The best female character in Genesis is, of course, Tamar.

Great book. According to a former professor of mine, if you get Atwood drunk enough she'll admit it's science fiction.

FF, and kind of gets a rough deal with everything, considering how stereotyped her descendants are in the Old Testament (and the rest of the Jewish scriptures probably, but I haven't read those).

My favorite Biblical women are probably Deborah and Jael/Yael though. Deborah because she's a prophetess and shames Barak the Israelite commander into fighting, and Jael because she takes a hammer and tent peg and literally pounds the enemy commander's head into the ground. Both of those are pretty cool accounts.

Frankly I wish my faith would talk about these women more, and acknowledge that yes, there were prophetesses in the scriptures.

Another Hebrew Bible prophetess is Huldah, who confirms the authenticity of the 'Scroll of the Law' found during Temple renovations in II Kings 22. Granted, she's not as cool as Deborah, but she's there, and what she does is important.

FF

Sara and Abraham were horrible. Abraham was basically a pimp.

FF, mostly my religious bias cause Muslims hold Hagar and Ishmael to high regard it's one aspect of the Hajj we perform when we run between the hills 7 times in remembrance of her running to find water for Ishmael and God heard Ishmael's cries and brought forth the Zamzam well to provide water for them

Personally I think Sarah's behavior was closer to that of a pimp but whatever.

Abraham pimped Sara out. Sarah pimped Hagar out.

How did God "sh*t on her"?  And BTW, Sarah had the great nation promise, too.

By constantly taking Sarah's side, among other things.

Yes, in connection with the promise to Abraham. The promise to Hagar exists independently in the text.
