www.nytimes.com/2015/09/26/us/john-boehner-to-resign-from-congress.html?_r=0

This has obviously been discussed at length in the rest of the forum in terms of what it means for House leadership and national politics, but I haven't seen much yet on who his potential replacements are in his district, or when the special election will be held.

All we know is the Republican will be more conservative. Boehner is the most moderate member in the house according to govtrack.

Isn't that skewed by the fact that he's the speaker?

The Speaker typically doesn't vote on bills....

No effect on Senate or presidency, the Dems have practically ceded the House anyways, just have a change in Speakership without a coup.

He wanted to consolidate power, didnt want to pass bipartisan bills to get through Senate.

Welcome back!

Democrats are viewing it with mixed reactions; positive because they dislike the Speaker & negative because whoever replaces him (both as Speaker and as Congressman) is going to be even more extreme most likely.

I'd say Republicans are a little more unified on how it is a positive thing for them.

Ex-Rep. Steve Austria (who was sacrificed in redistricting), has >$200K left in his account, which could help in a quick special election. Some carpetbagging but his old district shared a media market with the current CD8.

Austria is, probably, "insufficiently conservative" (read - extreme) for present day Republican party. Especially - in this district.

Potential candidates from Politics1.com

District 8 - Special Election 2015:
[ John Boehner (R)* - (House Speaker Site) - Resigning effective October 30, 2015. ]
Matthew Ashworth (R) - Businessman, Tea Party Activist & '14 Candidate
Steve Austria (R) - Ex-Congressman, Ex-State Sen., Ex-State Rep. & Financial Planner
Bill Beagle (R) - State Sen., Ex-Tipp City Councilman & Businessman
Gary Cates (R) - Ex-State Sen., Ex-State Rep. & Ex-Union Township Trustee
Bill Coley (R) - State Sen., Ex-State Rep. & Attorney
Tim Derickson (R) - State Rep., Ex-Hanover Township Trustee & Realtor
Keith Faber (R) - State Senate President, Ex-State Rep. & Attorney
Richard Jones (R) - Butler County Sheriff
Chris Widener (R) - State Sen., Ex-State Rep. & Architect
J.D. Winteregg (R) - Teacher, Tea Party Activist & '14 Candidate
Dennis Smith (D)

Ashworth, Winteregg and Dennis Smith have already entered the race.  It's possible Ashworth and Winteregg may have entered to run against Boehner and don't actually want to run in the special election.

It's probably going to go to some low-key State Rep. or Senator.

Along with Gingrich & speaker designate Levingston, polarized speaker ever. And Dems failed to recapture the House. But no matter what; voters want legislation and immigration was one Boehner could have passed. But it serves him well to have it blocked even at expense of not having a GOP prez.

Does Faber live here? I was under the impression he was intentionally drawn out of OH-8 by the Mercer Country tri chop. Not that that stops anyone from running, but it matters still.

You only have to live in the same state. You can run despite not being from the district, probably because of gerrymandering.
