This isn't exactly the audience I would expect to boo Trump and be up in arms over a diss to Rubio.

Both of you are right. They're booing Rubio, but Donald is reacting if negatively from the reaction.

Trump also kind of sounds like he's crying.

Genius. This campaign was in dire need of a Christ-like martyr bearing the cross for us all. They have no right to attack him.

No one should be shocked Trump was not well recieved at this event. Remember, according to at least one study, Trump's supporters are less engaged and less informed than the average GOP primary voter. People in this room were very engaged, and most are well informed.

Trump was out of his element here and his strategy backfired.

I don't see where his strategy backfired here.  Trump called out Rubio for "flip-flopping".  It's one thing to flip on an issue when you have new information.  It's another thing when you flip on an issue while considering a run for President and you're caught in it.

The limitations on Marco Rubio stem from the fact that he is ENTIRELY a political creature.  He's done well, from a strategy point of view.  I see him as having a bit of an advantage over the rest of the Establishment crowd in the GOP primary, and I see him winning Jeb's supporters over, as Bush Fatigue is a real thing, for a myriad of reasons.  But Rubio is running in an environment where the backlash against the Political Class is very real, and dismissing the rebels as "low information voters" is not only condescending, it's forgetting that a high-information voter doesn't get more weight to their vote by virtue of their being knowledgeable.  Rubio would be a NOBODY without powerful insiders driving his career, and this is something that isn't particularly savory in the current political environment.

Some of them were booing Rubio I'm sure, but Rubio has his support in this crowd.  Rubio has pretty high approvals among Republicans (much higher than Trump) and he tends to have respect from evangelicals except for those who are most anti-immigration.
