Like Boehner was?

I don't see that working, unless the conservatives have finally come to their senses.

I think many in the House Republican Caucus are more fragile than we thought. The civil war has been taking it's toll.

The DNC won't know how to capitalize on this.

On FOX right now, Shepard Smith just made a direct connection between McCarthy dropping out of the race and Walter Jones' letter that demanded anyone with "skeletons in their closet" to drop out of the leadership race - he's going to speak with Jones after the current commercial break

(does anyone even care about my cable news updates lol)

At the bottom of Walter Jones' letter he wrote in his own handwriting that "I believe this question is important to the integrity of the House" but he's telling Shep that it was only about hypothetical concerns and he totally didn't know about any actual scandals among any of the leadership candidates. Shepard Smith is ripping him to shreds for not spilling the beans

Ebsy, I am at my internship at the RPOF and am too busy to go take peaks at the TV in the other room (but not enough to apparently post Tongue) and my apartment does not have Fox News or MSNBC. If I want political news, I am forced to watch C-SPAN 2 or CNN (I don't even get regular CSPAN for the love of God). Your news updates are really a service to me.

Please let me know how the Walter Jones thing goes.

He reminds me of Virgil Goode. A lot like Goode, actually.

Freedom Caucus talking point (from Mick Mulvaney): "I'm not sure why we postponed the election just because McCarthy dropped out. At the very least we should have had a vote on whether to postpone it"

(also, Mulvaney is apparently one of those fast-talking red-faced types that make me wonder if they do cocaine)

Dana Rorabacher proposing a "caretaker speaker" just to have a warm body filling the office until the next election

That's just sad.

AND THE TABLES HAVE TURNED

Boehner has announced that he is prepared to stay on for the remainder of the current Congressional term. In light of this news, a sizable contingent of establishment Republicans have stated that they will not support any new candidate for Speaker (and until someone else has 218 votes, Boehner will remain Speaker).

This means he is free to abandon the Hastert Rule, marginalize the Freedom Caucus, and honestly do pretty much whatever he wants for the next thirteen months

Boehner un-resigning is a PR nightmare. They need to elect somebody else.

It's not like this House has any interest in passing laws anyway.

The hype surrounding Paul Ryan continues to build. It's leaked that Boehner personally asked him to reconsider, he's McCarthy's top choice, and he was mentioned as an acceptable candidate for Speaker by literally every Republican Member of Congress I saw interviewed today (at least twenty of them)
