Pat Paulsen ran several campaigns for president, mostly to promote his comedy. However, he did get a small following as a protest candidate among center-left voters in 1968. Let's suppose he continued his campaign into the general as a center-left independent candidate against Humphrey, Nixon, and Wallace, while still essentially being "in character" (i.e. still making ridiculous promises, giving largely sarcastic speeches) but was able to garner a following, and say, 10-20% of the vote. How would the election have turned out? Just a bigger Nixonslide, or would non-Humphrey voters and non-voters in general have also been among his supporters?
