It was obviously a poor decision, but how do you view it on a moral basis?

Helped fueling fundamentalism in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Morally? I'm not a fan of agressive wars you see.

What fueled fundamentalism in Afghanistan and Pakistan was CIA dollars and the Soviet-aligned government daring to educate women. If religious lunatics organizing themselves in response to modernity being brought to the mountains of Afghanistan, then so be it. The unfortunate thing is that the Soviets half-assed the whole project and eventually were forced out, allowing the religious nuts to win with the aid of Ronnie Raygun and his CIA spooks.

Bankrupt and kinda racist attempt to shore up their unpopular puppet regime which was being misruled by the insane PdPA.

It was a freedom invasion, which helped ending a horrible regime, with the result that over 350 million people was liberated. Of course it also resulted in a 40 year long armed struggle in Afghanistan, but hey Poles and German mean more to me than Afghans does.

Sorry I was jumbling my words. I meant to say that is often defended in a quasi-racist way, where the Afghan populace is little more than dumb sheeple who needed the world's most elitist 'communist' party to correct their thoughts, and when they were rejected needed to be bailed out by a neighbouring enlightened European state. Of course, the opposition was fairly conservative and distasteful, np but that's only because things became so polarised after the PDPA assassinated the president that was introducing the bulk of the social reforms and then needlessly antagonised the countryside.

Yeah apologists tend to forget the communists overthrew a very secular and modernizing (and also fairly authoritarian...but its not like the communists were an improvement) government.

Freedom Invasion (pro-woman, anti-religion)
So would you have supported an American invasion of Iran in 1979 to remove the Ayatollah and give back power to a secular dictator who was pro-woman?

No, because the American government is a capitalist government.

In hindsight, I think both invasions were good. Although I most likely would not have supported the Soviet invasion at the time.

In hindsight the Soviet invasion was a good thing?

The Taliban would have never existed without the Soviet invasion.

It's possible but far from a certainty. The Taliban came to power because the people the Soviets were fighting were totally unable to run a government.

Let's clear up some misconceptions. First of all, women's rights (as well as overall prosperity, stability, modernity, etc. etc.) were at their highest level during the 1950s and 1960s under the rule of the old king, whom the Soviets deposed. Women's rights got dramatically worse under Soviet rule (you can't find any photos like these from the 1980s, because they don't exist).

A country that was stable, growing more prosperous, and modernizing was radically destabilized for imperialist reasons by the Soviets, who put into power a puppet government with zero popular support, guaranteeing civil war, and state collapse as soon as they left. During the course of their imperialist war of aggression, the Soviets and their Quislings laid waste to the country and murdered half a million civilians.
