The most bizarre thing about this story to the extent it is true, is that it seems to imply the meeting was at the behest of the Vatican. Apparently Pope Francis is not only opposed to SSM, but also if he meant to lend his support to Davis' actions, is willing to abandon the rule of law when it comes to government officials obeying it to the extent necessary for the government to perform its duties, in this case issue marriage licenses to SS couples. Very disappointing.

Will this end the love that many liberals have for Pope Francis?  I mean, I remember that 2 years ago liberals absolutely adored him.

Yes. Can we please end the pretence the Pope is 'different' in substance rather than style.

I still love him because of his emphasis, and that he still loves and deeply respects people who disagree with him.

And picks Kim Davis of all people as 'strong'.

Vatican confirms the meeting happened.

I'm surprised how little I care about this. I think everyone's going to see in this Pope what they want to see and need to see, and that's ok.

Kim Davis has done everyone a favour. Her posturing highlighted to many indifferent people how ludicrous 'religious exemption' (which has gained an over importance in comparison to other matters of conscience) can become in many day to day situations. Now she's got people finally thinking a little more about the Pope's posturing too.

Pope Francis takes another giant leap in meeting with the lowest among us. What a man!

What kind of respect would a Oneness Pentecostal have for the sitting Pope?

I figure most conservative Evangelicals in the U.S. couldn't give two cents to what Pope Francis had to say on anything; he wasted his time.

Pope Francis is like the little scroll in Revelation:  His words and actions taste sweet... but once they sink in, they are bitter to the stomach.

Could Kim go from Apolistic Democrat to Catholic Republican in a month's time?

Not a Catholic, so I honestly don't care what the Pope says. As far as I'm concerned, he's just another man.

Could meet with a much better person representing opposition to same sex marriage than Davis. Kind of like picking the worst of a group similar to how the US elects politicians.

For now, at least, we have no idea what was said or even why the visit took place. Some conclusions are obvious, of course, but none of them tell us anything new.

That said, the expectations that some people have of Pope Francis are so out there relative to where the Church is that it's endearing. The idea of a belief system that sincerely opposes (certain forms of) social exclusion, environmental degradation, consumer culture, and so on while simultaneously barring women from positions of authority and rebuking gay marriage should not be so shocking. The contrast with the troglodytic, self-absorbed, sex-crazed style of religious conservatism that dominates cultural conversations in the United States is stark. Oh well.

Very true, and good point that Catholic Doctrine is an entirely different system of thought from the usual American Religious Conservatism. For me, the odd thing is that Kim Davis, an Apostolic Pentecostal, would want to meet Pope Francis. Someone of her theological orientation would be more likely to view the head of the Catholic Church as false prophet at best, and the actual Anti-Christ at worst.

Unless you're an athiest, you should have respect to religious leaders, whatever region they may be from.

His statements on immigration should be enough of a tip off that rule of is not his necessarily his first concern when it comes to politics.

What he told Kim Davis we don't know beyond her account. The Vatican has tried to keep this on the dl.  The Pope has spoken forcefully in support of an expansive definition of religious liberty, but he is first and foremost a minister, not a lawyer.

Sure, but he's still the Pope. There's some things he'll be conservative on since he's the boss of Catholicism.

EDIT: I also get the sarcasm. Tongue
