Donald Rumsfield worked as the Chief of Staff from 1974-1975 under President Ford, and from what I've read, he ran a pretty tight ship. Cheney succeeded him as Chief of Staff from '75 to '77 and was later Secretary of Defense from 1989-1993. Under Cheney as Sec. of Defense, we had the Gulf War, but it was a war which was won conclusively, no quagmires, no major losses or wars in general, and he did well in handling the ending of the Cold War in his post. Both guys seemed like moderate Republicans...When did they turn to the dark side and become the hawks they became?

Sounds to me like they turned to the light side, actually.

I think in the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union, a lot of people (neo-conservatives in particular) got a little arrogant about US power (see for example The End of History). The think tank PNAC gathered likeminded neo-conservatives together and was eventually hugely influential in the Bush Administration.

And, to be fair to Cheney and Rumsfeld, they weren't crazy for wanting to get rid of Saddam. If they could've gathered a wider coalition and had a better plan for post-Saddam Iraq, they probably wouldn't have quite the negative reputation they have today.

Jesus!  No man.  Overthrowing any government in the middle east is an expensive bad idea.  A few more partners and a little more money and planning would not have fixed Iraq.  There is only one thing that could fix Iraq... and we let him be hanged.

I have it on good authority (someone who knew him personally) that Dick Cheney was an arrogant piece of work in high school. So, before the late 50s for him.

Cheney voted for what amounted to being pro-White South Africa legislation while in the house. Just because they were competent in the 70's-90's doesn't mean they couldn't be conservative. In the 80's, Iraq would've been a sideshow and outweighable compared to the Soviet Union. Take, what was it, Libya during the early 80's? A disaster such as Iraq would've been easily ignorable and funds would've been diverted to other causes like Latin America.

People don't change, they just unmask themselves.

They were not born evil, they had evil thrust upon them.

This question baffles me.  The world was a different place under Gerald Ford.  Plus they were much younger men who revered Ford.

A different President, age, and 35 more years of seeing the sh**t that goes on the world changed them or at least brought out the worst in them.

That said, I'm still a fan of Dick Cheney in many ways.

Nixon was better than Reagan and Coolidge.

Because "muh moderation"? Nevermind that his entire presidency was a scam. I mean, I regard Nixon as preferable, but that's only because of my sadistic tendencies. Anyone who gives a damn about preserving this country in its present state would know that Nixon's a cyanide capsule.
