Practically? Harvesting resources off-Earth from nearby objects (like asteroids) is a worthwhile, longterm goal.

Maybe we could partner with the corporate world on this?

If we go Independent, I think we should have a space program. As far as latitudes go, it's always been easier the nearer you are the equator to get something to escape the atmosphere, but we're at a point with technology where I don't think that would be a deal breaker at all.
