Another forgotten British Prime Minister (1894-95)
More of an Aristocratic celebrity (
his image being used on cigar boxes) than a real politician. He did posses some touch for modern politics (like being a chief organizer of the famous Midlothian Campaign), but never served in the Commons, which led Churchill to conclude he "never knew got it works", which is a true handicap for the PM.
Became Prime Minister by default after Gladstone's final resignation, being the less objectionable Liberal to the Queen (logically, the job should've went to Chancellor William Harcourt). After little over a year, he got bored with the demands of the job, so he took the first pretext to resign (losing in the committee on army supply by just seven votes) and went onto losing an election to Salisbury by a landslide. He spent the rest of his life as an increasingly reactionary troll. His terms as PM and Foreign Secretary are rated by historians as failure.
Funnily, his three life goals were to "to win the Derby, to marry an heiress, and to become Prime Minister". He managed all three, although it's too bad he never wished to be an effective PM.
