Kind of moronic, since I don't think anyone seriously argues that the US is a direct democracy.

Still better than the folks who call it a "compound constitutional republic" (Mike Lee and his fans, mostly). Most people who say the republic not a democracy thing just want to poke Democrats a bit though.
