The Donald and Hillary are 19th cousins, according to genealogy experts.
are a common ancestor from England 18 generations ago. John of Gaunt, the duke of Lancaster, and third wife Katherine Swynford at the end of the 14th century — a century before Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Fun fact, all of the presidents except for one are directly related through King John of England. And the related presidents include Obama; it's actually Martin Van Buren who isn't related, as all presidents have English ancestry except for Van Buren, who was purely Dutch.

Is everyone of English ancestry really a direct descendent of King John?

Everyone is probably related if you go back far enough.  I remember when someone found that Bush and Obama are cousins as well (and even somewhat closer than Trump and Clinton, IIRC).

Obama and President Bush are 10th cousins, once removed, linked by Samuel Hinkley of Cape Cod, who died in 1662.

Perhaps not EVERYONE, but yes, almost all are.
Sweet, I'm pretty sure my 7th great grandfather was English. Now I just need to figure out how many people I need to usurp.

Nope, but all the presidents (except for Van Buren) are. Obama is related on his mother's side, of course. Here's a link on how they all trace back. I know its the Daily Mail, but there are other, more reputable sources that have that info as well.

EDIT: I think the kid who found it out might be Mormon, which explains the genealogy focus.

I once had to explain to someone how this did not imply that the Presidency was some sort of great royalist conspiracy.  Oy vey.

I mean, I discovered when I was in undergrad that one of my best friends was my 15th cousin or so.  In all likelihood, that's actually an underestimate of our relatedness, as we both have "colonial American" ancestors.

This is stretching the words 'cousin' and 'related' to somewhere beyond breaking point, I feel.

I seem to be related to most of the prominent New England families, including the Bushes. Just having an ancestor on the Mayflower or close to it, who then makes some money and has zillions of kids generation after generation, will do that. Smiley

Dutch genealogies just don't go that far back.

Wow! I thought that it would be John F. Kennedy.

...anything on Jefferson Davis or Sam Houston?

I remembered reading that George W Bush is also something like 8th cousins with Britney Spears, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Barack Obama, and Madonna.

Mind blowing fact: If you go back 1,000 years in Europe, anybody living then who has a descendant living today is an ancestor of everyone living today with European ancestry.

No, really.
