Chafee just gave a foreign policy speech before a hostile crowd, the hawkish Foreign Policy Institute.  He dinged Clinton in what may be a preview of what he’s going to do in the debate:

But the speech also gave a broader look at Chafee’s foreign policy outlook:

After criticizing the US’s “disrespect” of Hugo Chavez during his time as Venezuelan president, Chafee was questioned about the human rights situation in Venezuela:

Did he not mention her wanting to make a no-fly zone where Russian planes are flying?

He was more liberal than most Democrats when he was a Republican.

He's never changed positions, only parties.

Chafee is pretty much the 2004-era stereotype of "sissy liberal" Democrats in the mind of Republicans, but true.

Chafee supports lifting sanctions against Russia in response to its hostilities in Ukraine.

Wow. He can't be serious.

Yes.  Can we maybe get a criticism of Hillary's hawkishness from a candidate who isn't a caricature of a liberal useful idiot?

While the U.S. would do well to scale back some of its commitments, close some of its bases, think long and hard about fighting wars where vital national interests are not at stake, and even seek accommodation with hostile powers where mutual interests can be found, prostrate surrender, appeasement, and isolationism will hardly bring peace.

Awful.  Absolutely horrible policy.

Leaving an oppressive regime that is effectively an Iranian client state in power leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.  Also, this result would escalate the Sunni-Shia conflict in the region.  It certainly won't solve any problems, and lead to more long term instability in the region.

The sad thing is, short of using military force to oust Assad, it may be our only option.

It's funny that a former Republican is the one who most fits the GOP stereotype of liberals being "pinkos" in this case.  Chafee is just clueless.

Liberal Republicans tend to best fit conservatives' fears. Bloomberg's "pop ban" and attempt to bring gun control to the national fore are good examples. They also tend to have the privileged background to allow for fearmongering against "trust fund socialists" or somesuch. They're the perfect opponent.

Pretty much.  Rockefeller, Bloomberg, and Chafee basically epitomize what the conservative base despises (sorry Rockefeller GOP and Oldies Sad ).
