Coalition spokesperson Colonel Brian Tribus says that the airstrike "may have caused collateral damage to a nearby health facility."

OK, that's disgusting. I hope a full apology comes out of the office responsible for this, along with a plan to make sure it never happens again.

I have a very, very hard time believing this is really an accident.

Using technical phrases like "collateral damage" and "health facility" when speaking to the public in an instance like this comes off as assholery. A minimum of empathy with the victims would clearly suit him.

"Collateral damage" is not a phrase that should ever be used externally and a spokesperson should know that.

But yeah, Tribus isn't necessarily a scumbag, he is likely just an officer using military lingo in a situation where its entirely inappropriate. You can't rule out he actually thought about the "collateral damage" as real people, but was just too used to the phrase.

War is legitimately one of the worst if not the worst things humans do--our entire foreign policy should be set up with the sole focus of minimizing deaths; especially to innocent people.

Accidents happen, and people die, and that's truly a horrific thing. What's just as bad is that I have no faith whatsoever in my consistently crap government to take any measures to keep things like this from happening again.

I don't think it's the government's role to intervene in every damn global crises that happens. Just how I don't think it's their right to take people's money, spy on them, tell them who they can't marry or what they can't smoke; but now it's even more important because the lives of actual human beings are at stake.

But if you still intervene (they've never taken my advice before), do two things: 1) know what you're doing (first WMDs, now Al-Assad: first he's the evil guy we need to risk human life to get rid of, now he's our BFF to defeat IS(IS/IL)--get the facts correct, please), and 2) only kill the legitimately bad people, and no one else. This is why the atomic bombs at the end of WWII were wrong--too many innocent deaths to justify it.

This isn't a damn video game. People die. Get it right or get the f**ck out.

(Aw, I was trying to avoid that turning into a rant...oops...)

Yes, this is horrible and shouldn't have happened.  But that's the fog of war for ya, there are always going to be civilian casualties and mistakes made.  Hopefully somebody pays for this one, but I don't believe for one second that the military intentionally bombed a hospital.

It sounds like the Afghan government wanted the hospital taken out and gave the US forces false information.

It's looking more and more like Doctors without borders is a terrorist organization, sadly.

The adverb in the thread title appears increasingly difficult to defend.
