Most teachers don't want to be armed; good luck getting that through the unions; likely unconstitutional; etc etc

The last thing that any teacher would want in a classroom is a gun, even on his person, let alone in the teachers desk.

As an ex-high school teacher I can confirm you are definitely tempted at times. Pretty sure I would have been in jail by now if allowed to carry a loaded firearm in class.

My God, he's so blatant a panderer it's pathetic. Not as pathetic as the fact that his followers actually believe he believes in what he's saying.

No, I'm not on board with Trump. I just decided not to denounce the idea in the OP. I could see myself subscribing to this idea for principals or teachers who have been in the district a long time and are viewed very favorably, but trusting the average run of the mill teacher with a gun? No.

Gun supporters always think arming everyone is the answer. A few days ago, some law abiding gun carrying bystander decided to intervene in a carjacking, but ended up shooting the victim in the head, at which point the law abiding guy carrying bystander fled the scene to avoid getting into trouble.

You are assuming the average principal or long time teacher would want to wander the halls of a school with a gun.  You know most people in America don't own guns and have no interest in having them around.  Most people in Texas don't own a gun.  Good luck finding a principal in Delaware who is going to want to pack heat.

I interpreted the OP as ironic support for this idea.

I was just thinking the same thing. Why are we infringing upon kindergarteners' constitutional right to bear arms? They have every right to carry a gun, especially at recess! Forget red rover and kickball, let's play tag you're it with our new toys! It'll be fun! What could possibly go wrong?

I feel like I need to check myself into a mental institution after typing that, but that's how the far-right crazies seem to think nowadays: we won't be safe until EVERYBODY has a gun to protect themselves. After all, when we create gun-free zones, that's just ASKING for it. Fish in a barrel, my friends. The Second Amendment is absolute and any attempts to usurp that is an infringement, while the rest of the Constitution is negotiable.

More guns is NOT the answer.

Even in the Deep South most teachers don't know how to use guns and would therefore be useless in a school shooting situation.

How long until a (group of) student(s) attacks some poor teacher, who never wanted a gun, so that they can get the teachers gun?
So the teacher either shoots the student(s) or hands over a loaded gun.

Great. So the next time someone decides to shoot up a school, the shooter will target the teachers first. How is that going to solve anything?

Trump is just making another grab for attention, though, so I shouldn't expect this to make any sense.

What about trusting the average run of the mill person in the street with a gun? Are teachers more or less trustworthy?

I've advocated this for years.  Our public schools are dangerous on a daily basis.  I believe that teachers should be required to go through some sort of limited law enforcement training and should be carrying concealed while in the classroom.  I don't think that this should be mandatory for all existing teachers, but it should be part of new teacher training, and existing teachers who opt for this training ought to receive it free and receive a bonus.

Our schools are incredibly dangerous, from the middle school level and up.  There are gangs in even suburban and rural high schools.  Let's stop kidding ourselves about how guns are the problem.  CRIMINALS are the problem.  The earlier a law abiding citizen shoots back, the fewer lives are lost.

What if an unstable teacher locks the door and mows down his class one day?
