fg(sane)

7 day poll and as always votes can be changed because that's only fair
unlike in chess where you're not really supposed to retract bad moves

I like it, but only against average to bad players.  I kind of suck at it.

It requires a lot of thinking ahead which makes it difficult. Those who are really good at it have to be good at focusing and concentrating and controlling their emotions.

It is a rare game in that a resignation of a lost position is an honorable act. Too often games, especially sports, are supposed to be fought until the end. The real world is far more akin to chess in that it is usually better in the face of inevitable defeat to admit as much and move on to other quests. Chess is one of the few games that teaches when to recognize a losing position and gracefully retire. fg

Good point. Wouldn't it be nice if people were more willing to do that in a political discussion or a religious debate?

I love it and I hate it because I love it and it can control me. I have played it and regret it, but I want to play it again.

Chess is flawed: White has a greater than 50% chance of winning the game against an equally matched opponent. That same flaw was recognized in Go but was subsequently reduced with a handicap.

I honestly have no opinion of it. I neither enjoy it, nor do I dislike it.

Generally, though, I'm not a fan of board games. I'd rather go outside and throw a football around, tbh.

You make an excellent point, but remember some games end in a draw. Overall white has the advantage. But chances are if the two players are equal, black will either win or draw more than 50% of the time. It is only a real problem if they only play once, because unless black wins the first game the players can switch colors in the second game. I don't know how this is handled in professional chess. The point is that this small advantage for white is a small flaw, but perhaps not a big one. How often do you have two players that are basically equal?

That's the way life can be in general.

Your point is true. In competitive chess the competition structures account for this and try to reduce its impact on the results of the competition. Long matches are used for world championships although not nearly as long currently as in previous eras. The biggest tournaments are round robin or double round robin tournaments, the second being far better at equaling the effect of color as everyone plays everyone else twice.
