Why would anyone care what language someone else spoke?  It is their choice.

Try conducting business with someone who doesn't speak your language.

I hardly think Americans are harmed by not being able to 'conduct business' with some poor immigrant who mows their lawn, builds their house, or cleans their toilet.  In any case, it is a private matter, and none of the government's affair.

If you move to the United States, you should learn the language.

Believe me, it's annoying.

On the other hand, you aren't going to be able to convince someone like opebo.

I probably have more experience making deals with people who don't speak English  very well than anyone on this board.  I can tell you that it works like this - if you have the money and they want it, they will learn your language.  If they have the money and you want it, you will learn their language.  The money is where the power lies.

Nevertheless I have picked up a little Thai.  It is fun, both for communicating and for eavesdropping.

Well, use your powers of communication to tell some of your Thai women to come over there then, so Born on the Floor can enjoy hot *legal* immigrants without worrying about whether his hot chicks are in trouble with the government. Tongue

Two problems with that - first, it is virtually impossible to get into the States, and secondly most Thais don't really want to leave Thailand - it is just too pleasant here.

No, most Thais find it much more pleasant in Thailand than in the U.S.  It is an age old adage among sexpats - the Phillipinas want to go to your country, but the Thais want you to come live in their country.  They'll marry an old white guy, but they generally want no part of some cold, expensive, inconvenient country with horrible food.
