Why must we raise the rates? It seems like nothing but spite.

Sometimes the people like to be entitled to the fruits of their labor and not have so much unneeded, cuttable bureaucracy

Strongly agree, for both practical and moral reasons. Fundamentally, governments have to be paid for, and it makes more sense for people like Bill Gates - who could easily pay higher taxes and still maintain his current standard of living - to do most of the paying. When every citizen has access to a first rate education, every family has food on their table and a roof over their head, every sick man, woman, and child has access to quality medical care, our infrastructure in perfect condition, our military has everything it needs, our emergency responders have amble resources, our natural resources are protected, the unemployed can find work, and our cities are thriving centers of growth, then it may be time to cut taxes on the rich. Until then, everyone must contribute to the extent that they are able to do so, and this means that the super-rich will chip in more than the rest of us.

Aw, boohoo. Sad

The rich person making $5,000,000 a year might make only $2,500,000 a year. How will they ever survive with such meager pay?

Oh, oh, or even worse. Somebody who never had to work a day in their life for their fortune might have some of the fruits of somebody else's labor taken away. A travesty.

Disagree would rather have the government cut 25% of the budget.

Just cut the budget, co's that f*king works so well. At least it's better than austerity, which involves raising taxes for middle class people as well as cutting essential programs in the budget.

Dont worry I believe that military spending should be cut by 25% too like the rest of the budget

I'm going to play the role of the dick on this one (others did it for me in the last few of these, especially that first one...sheesh people, you knew what the question was asking).

Define "rich".  Should taxes be raised on the investment banker making 4 gajillion?  Probably.  Should you keep paying into social security after hitting the $120k/year (or whatever it is) limit?  Of course.  Should the rate people that make 100k to 500k a year pay? probably not.  Should the Capital Gains rate go up? probably not.

and I agree with those saying we should cut some spending too.

Not sure how to vote.

Many people on Atlas seem to be suffering from a critical form of jealousy.

I don't know. Jealousy? It seems like basic morality to me that something is fundamentally unfair when one arbitrary group of people get all the fruits of economic growth while others are left in the cold.

Economic growth doesn't fall from the skies, it happens because people take risks and add something that the market values. I'm for a safety net for those who cannot work, but I don't think it is immoral for some to earn much more than others. And I don't think at this point the rich should be taxed even more.
