Now that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has dropped out of the House Speakership election; what would be the upside and downside to Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.)?

On Congressional paper, she looks good.

In real life, she would be the most exciting speaker Speaker since Gingrich.

Have you ever seen her talk? Or are you just talking out of your ass again?

You have the most ridiculous criteria for politicians. Like every other post is of you going off on someone.

The funny part is I respect you deeply.

To answer your question, her predecessors are Hastert, Pelosi, and Boehner. It's not the most difficult thing to be better speakers than them.

All I ask is for people on this forum to do their homework. And truthfully, I'm fading away from this forum to AAD just because of that - I'm tired of going off on people, but I'll do it if I see something ridiculous.

You're on this side of the mountains too, huh?

My two cents (also as one of her constituents): Cathy is a good Congresswoman... but I don't think she'd make a great Speaker. The traits that make her effective for her constituents - deep ties to the district, advocacy on issues that matter to WA-5, terrific constituent services - aren't what make a great Speaker. She's not very charismatic. I doubt she'd have much sway with the hardliners, since she's to the left of McCarthy (no moderate, but still less conservative than him). I don't see it.

Though it would be cool for WA-5 to produce a second Speaker. I wonder if any one district has ever produced two Speakers before?

Oh, in looking at some videos of her, she's pleasant, has a nice smile, but seems to speak in platitudes, and I don't think she would be effective selling the Pub policy agenda. She never went to college, which might be a handicap when dealing with complexity. So kind of comme si, comme ca, for me.

The R's are likely to hold onto house, but they have squandered what good will they have in the 2016 election,  helping Clinton win & win the Senate.

I don't see her as leadership material for that sort of position. She would be out within a few months.

Its Ryan's Speakership if he wants it. GOP are gonna be careful about putting out GOP females in leadership roles since debacle of Palin.

Yes, because everyone with a vagina is clearly as articulate and intelligent as Palin. Roll Eyes

McMorris Rodgers does have on advantage as someone who can bridge the gap between the establishment and Tea Party, but that's basically where her advantages end. She's also not someone who's likely to play hardball when needed, I see her ending up being as effective as Boehner.

Pretty much, yeah.  It's not like being a male somehow shields you from saying idiotic things (Louie Gohmert *cough *cough*) as a congressman.  McMorris-Rodgers would likely be a decent speaker, though Ryan is still likely the best choice.

The GOP majority in the House is almost uncontrollable and I don't think McMorris Rodgers has what it takes to do it.  Of course, the argument could be made that no one can control the House GOP these days.

If Hillary becomes President there is a fair chance this idea may gain traction in the future.  McMorris Rodgers is the highest ranking woman in the House leadership.  Whether she will fall victim to the same forces that halted former Rep. Jennifer Dunn (R-Wash.) when she tried to move up the ranks remains to be seen.

Sarah Palin hurt herself though. McMorris-Rodgers has been in Leadership for awhile now.
