Choose the next speaker! (my choice is still Dent)

(And if you're wondering where options 10 and 11 come from, they're the people I had become Majority Leader and Majority Whip during my 'romney downfall' timeline after Boehner and Cantor both lost their primaries in that universe's 2014. I threw them in this poll for the heck of it.)

Most of the republicams have been mentioned on one of the other threads on this topic. Scalise and Sessions are/were candidates for other positions but may reconsider with McCarthy out.

I try to abstain from empty quoting as much as possible, but there literally is just one sane option:

If I could pick any Congressman to be Speaker, I'd say Joe Heck, but of the realistic people, Paul Ryan.

Ryan would be wonderful but his reluctance to take it could make the position even more difficult if it makes it apparent that he doesn't truly want to be there.

For entertainment purposes, I'd love to see Trey Gowdy get it.

Congress has effectively become a three-party system, with the Hastert Rule being abandoned for most enacted legislation in the last few years. The Vichy Republicans may as well make this more explicit by forming a minority government with Democratic supply votes, perhaps giving a few members of Pelosi's clan strategic chairmanships. Then perhaps voters may wise up and primary them, and judge the effectiveness of the Congress as a de facto coalition government rather than a Republican majority.

Interesting idea.

Of these choices, probably Xavier Bercerra. I think Pelosi is an objectively good Speaker, but wasn't great at selling the Democratic Party to the voters, and I blame her in large part for how bad 2010 ended up. I think Bercerra would probably be better at least in that regard.

Colin Powell. He has experience making tough deals, is a compromise kinda guy, and wants to get things done. No use throwing out the names of Democrats imo.
