No, I had never even HEARD of it until I was in college. No one in North Dakota or Minnesota associates Columbus Day with some sort of Italian heritage day.

No, not really, but in Los Angeles, there really wasn't, and isn't, an Italian American community profile, or Italian American neighborhoods and so forth.

This. Columbus Day was just an excuse to get a day off of school every few years or so. Sometimes we had school on Columbus Day, sometimes we didn't. Depended on the year.

I don't think I knew it was a thing until that one episode of The Sopranos.

Yes. When I lived in Cleveland there was always a Columbus Day Parade through Little Italy. That and they have a big statue of him in the park in Little Italy. I always assumed they think of him as the first Italian-American in some sense.

I don't think 17 counts as "growing up", and that's the earliest I possibly could have heard about it (although honestly I don't quite remember).

Inspired by some discussion on AAD and IRC.

I'd be very surprised. European hardcore scenes tend to stick to the same "throw away all your heritage and the baggage with it" values of the American scene.

Also I'm pretty sure that no one in it gives a f[inks] about Christopher Columbus, although to be fair I understand that's mostly true amongst all Italians.

Wait.. people get the day off of school?

Oh yeah.. my school district didn't give off for MLK Jr Day either... and one day for Easter... and no spring break.

We pretty much got nothing except New Years Day off in January and then President's Day in Feb. and nothing then until Easter.

I have the impression European hardcore scenes are full of people who are "traditionalist" (in the sense that they hate foreigners and feel connected to weird pagan rituals that obviously never existed in the way these people claim) yet who are vehemently opposed to organized religion at the same time, even though the latter might be different in Southern Europe. Not a nice bunch. Voted for the second option.

I guess my college had spring break.  We had "long weekend" in the fall in mid October we'd get Thurs-Fri off.  Then since it was a catholic place we'd get more or less a whole week for Easter.  And nearly a month for Christmas.

But those heathen public schools... the most ethnic they got was to serve Swedish meatballs and lefse the last day before Christmas break.

Obvious for me. My subculture and who I associate with because of it is FAR more important than my heritage, ancestry and stupid bullsh[inks] like "tradition" and all that nonsense.

I am Christian, hardcore and liberal in that order. Ethnicity doesn't even come into the equation.

Not entirely sure what the difference would be, for me, and that would probably be true for more people who are minorities... But I'll vote for ethnic identity since I also feel connected to Jews who don't adhere to the same Jewish lifestyle/"subculture" as I do.

Uh hardly true for all, I know that all Jews in the hardcore scene would answer that over their Jewishness.

Voted ethnic identity, since I don't really have a "subculture" unless you have a very liberal definition of what constitutes one.

My ethnicity, religion, and culture comes first.

I am Jewish (ethnically and in terms of religion) first, followed by my American Patriotism and Zionism, which is then followed by my Caucasian/Russian heritage (Caucasian as in from the Caucasus region of Asia not the stupid census designation).

I also strongly identify with other people who strongly identify with their ethnic culture, whatever it maybe. I like sharing my culture with others and learning about the cultures of others.

After that, my political affiliations are next in line.

How, exactly, does your statement contradict my statement? Because you seem to imply that.

The two are not always empirically separable, you know?
