1- You can vote for anyone who had ballot access in your state
2- If your avatar is different from your state, say what your state is
3- If don't live in one of the United States, your vote will be counted as a DC vote (thus at least that part of the map should be realistic Wink)
4- It doesn't matter if your state was part of the union at the time
5- I'll make a map of the current results every now and then
6- Election ends at noon on May 21st

My state will be California.

Al Smith.

Do you live there?

I'd prefer if everyone would vote in the state they actually live in, so that we can see how the true partisan breakdown among forum members living in each state is.

Connecticut

Al Smith

I've always felt the 1928 never got the attention it deserved. Smith had to go through so much bigotry because he was Catholic, even Kennedy had an easy time compared to him.

Ok, from your first post it sounded like we could choose any state. Maryland it is.

You forgot to point out that you voted there in 1928.

We're using modern EVs, so we should use modern locations for consistency.

Smith did support the repeal of Prohibition, but he advocated excessive governmental involvement in the economy (especially with regard to farming). In any event, the Democratic Party did not support him on the Prohibition issue.

Therefore, I vote for Herbert Hoover from New Jersey.

He was further to the right than Hoover.

Perhaps on some issues (tariffs, for example), but not on others (Smith believed that farm prices should be governmentally controlled, for instance). In later years, it is true that Smith was openly opposed to the New Deal, whereas Hoover created such bodies as the RFC.

Let's not forget that Hoover rose to prominence feeding the starving. Smith rose to prominence through the Tammany Machine.

Hoover's vision was for an expanded federal government that would benevolently manage the economy. Smith held a Jeffersonian position of states' rights and limited federal power. Farm prices are the only "liberal" position he took, and that was only to appeal to farmers in the wheat belt.

Vote: Alfred Smith

Awesome. SC will be darkest red just like it really was Smiley.

And I hope all people voting for Hoover know he was a big government interventionist who encouraged a disgusting campaign of religious bigotry and wanted to ban alcohol.

What does everyone think I should do about this? I don't really want all kinds of people switching their votes on me, though I can't say I'd mind switching this one vote over.

THROW IT OUT!

Seriously, I think you should allow it this one time, and not accept any more vote changes.
