Really interesting! Smiley

Texas looks like a massacre. I guess it's just the lack of appeal for Mondale in the South compared to Humphrey, though.

Texas has 254 counties, so the amount is not a lot.

In the South and Border, most of the counties that went for Humphrey in 1968 did so because George Wallace drew some votes away.

In the Northeast, many of these counties were ancestrally Democratic, but full of culturally conservative Catholics, who were the #1 focus of the 1972 Nixon campaign.  People forget that.  The 1972 Nixon campaign wasn't about a "Southern Strategy"; he KNEW he had the South in the bag.  Nixon wanted to really cream the Democrats by undercutting their NORTHERN base.  That's why Nixon did not come across as anti-labor; he wanted the votes of culturally conservative Union menbers.

Besides New York City, Macomb, MI probably had the largest Humphrey-Nixon swing, both numerically and percentagewise: Its population was 625,000 in 1970, and it gave Humphrey 55.2% in '68 and Nixon 62.7% in '72.
