Sorry for the non standard title, but this is crazy. Incumbent ultra awful President Jammeh seems to be going down in a landslide to rich estate agent Adama Barrow, as results are trickling in. Jammeh is a very nasty individual, and lacks the nuance of more modern strongmen on the continent like Kagame, so this could all go pear shaped. Still, a shocking result from what is one of the least democratic countries on the continent.

Maybe he was so convinced of his own propaganda he genuinely believed he'd get 99.X% regardless of any massaging.

Wow, seems Jammeh has conceaded. I was highly doubtful about him doing so, to use an oxymoron.

If he had any political sense, he'd get Jill Stein to challenge the results for him.

It seems the Army is on Jammeh's side. Strangely, yeah.

Just heard this on NPR. Is there a map somewhere?

Also, Wikipedia says that their 2011 election had him winning 72% of the vote with 83% turnout. This time he only got 40% with 59% turnout. Was there something awful in his administration the past five years, or did he just forget to rig the election (or both)?

He insulted a few large ethnic groups and has also become a bit more maniacal.

Still under dispute as far as I can tell. Evidently, a group of ambassadors from Gambia have issued a letter calling for Jammeh to accept his loss. (http://www.freedomnewspaper.com/gambia-breaking-news-gambian-diplomats-call-on-jammeh-to-step-down/)

Guardian says that African leaders are also calling for him to step aside, and will attend the innaugaration of the new leader (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/18/african-leaders-back-adama-barrow-as-new-president-of-the-gambia). Pressure seems to be building on Jammeh from many sources.

I have a feeling the AU will get a big, plush envelope of cash for Jammeh when the day of the inauguration arrives. He's a third world dictator-it's easier to buy off one of them than it is to purchase car insurance for God's sake.

West African ECOWAS is leading the attempt to get Jammeh out with Nigerian president Buhari as designated mediator. The AU isn't involved. Nigeria and Senegal want him out (he has supported a rebellion in southern Senegal), and Buhari taking on that task means the Nigerians mean business.

ECOWAS/Nigeria did a full invasion of Sierra Leone to get an unelected president out of power. They mean business more than the AU.
