VdB wins the election-day vote by 51.6 to 48.4 (exactly the opposite of May, when Hofer won it 52-48).

Castro, some mistakes in your translation:

"Ich hätte gerne auf unser Österreich aufgepasst."

should be translated with:

"I would have liked to watch over/look after our Austria."

and

"Es lebe unsere Heimat Österreich."

is more like

"Long live our homeland Austria."

Turnout still holding at an incredible 74% (+1.5)

Praise the awesome weather today. I wonder what would have happened if the weather were crappy and people stayed home ...

I guess many people in the rural areas, ESPECIALLY in the tourism-dominated western states, also re-considered for VdB because of what a Hofer-win would mean to tourism: It could have created a bad image abroad and tourists would have stayed away.

fpö operatives blame artists, businessmen and other parties for supporting VdB...

what happened with "the voters are able to make their own decisions"?

Well, there was one Austrian artist a few years back who I'm sure would have voted for Hofer.... Tongue

Seriously though, this is a good result. Stop fascism and xenophobia in its tracks, at least temporally. Stop their forward momentum.

At least one country is able to stop fascism. I'm really relieved and glad!

once again hofer et al are blaming the people's party's chief mitterlehner for the loss.....unbelievable.

and....lower austria voted for vdb....like upper austria, tyrol, salzburg, vorarlberg and vienna.

old-school industry region styria is the only major federal state voting for hofer.

VdB to win all Vienna districts this time.

Putting even the working-class Simmering into his column.

Did Austria's tourism sector get any noticeable hit after the FPÖ entered government in 2000?

not a fair comparison cause of the EU sanctions.

Wow, congrats Austria. Facing a bigger threat from immigration than the US, you still chose the sensible path. Wtf is wrong with the US man...

Austria's got fewer "poorly educated" for a Trump to love.  Also, in raw vote numbers, VdB is doing comparably to Hillary (but Austria hasn't got an "Electoral College" system)

What a gender gap, according to an exit poll:

Men: Hofer 56%, Van Der Bellen 44%
Women: Van Der Bellen 62%, Hofer 38%

The election day vote is now fully counted:

http://wahl16.bmi.gv.at

Turnout: 64.6% (but without postal votes, which are going to be counted tomorrow)

708.000 postal ballots were requested, about 620.000 were returned (I guess). May had a 86% return rate, I guess it will be 88% this time.

That means final turnout will be anywhere between 73.5% and 74.5%
