Glad to see a majority of the Austrian people disagree with this outrageous decision.

Huh

The poll shows they agree.

FPÖ voters don't count. Tongue

(ok, I misread the main chart, but my point stands)

Weird. Most non-FPÖ voters disagree with the decision but still think the revote "is important for democracy"? Go figure.

Having a problem with the sloppiness of election officials makes sense, I would too. That doesn't make the revote legitimate.

You can fix the sloppiness issue in the future without forcing the entire country to repeat a Presidential campaign whose outcome would almost certainly not have changed even without the sloppiness. Elections should only be annulled only when there is a reasonable suspicion that the winner would have been different.

I hope President Van der Bellen, following his triumphal reelection, will stage a coup and replace these fascist traitors with proper judges.

Nah, not really. I just wanted to point out that even if he wanted it, he couldn't do it.

The powers of the Austrian President are always overhyped by everyone (especially the very left-wing media and blogs) who think a President Hofer would turn Austria into a fascist hellhole if elected. In fact, a President Hofer would have to bow to pressure and play by the rules ...

What part of "coup" don't you understand? Tongue

So immigrants are not allowed to have opinions on the political situation in their home country?

Isn't being fascist the ultimate proof that they are a perfect fit for Austria's culture? Tongue

It would be quite interesting and informative to see a long drawn out court case on whether Hofer is a Nazi, and whether its appropriate to link the FPO to Nazism.  From the article it was hard to tell just how detailed the case in question was, but a real extensive court trial could look over the party platforms and compare the two, and also the experiences of Austria's first national FPO government in coalition with the OVP and see how that compared with Nazism.  Also, the current FPO participation within state governments could be look at.
I think the results would be informative and might help to deescalate political passions.

That is not a question for the judiciary to answer. It falls well within the realm of political dialectics.

Austrians are so rich that they can also lose all this time (and money) to unnecessary election

But Heaven forbid they spend that money to help refugees instead!

This thread is an abortion. Last warning to keep this thread focused, intelligent and of worth - I will delete any worthless posts. There's enough crass refugee talk in other threads (and forums) so let's try to keep such garbage away from the best board of the forum.

Sorry for sparking that one off. It's hard to resist the temptation of trolling some of these posters.

unchecked immigration from the Islamic State

Amazing how all four substantive words in this phrase should be in scare quotes.

In Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige tends to vote for mainstream centrist or center-left parties (the main local party, SVP, is part of the left coalition, and the Northern Leage always did very poorly). I doubt it would be fertile ground for Hofer, especially since Italians there would be scared by Austrian nationalism.

"Fun" fact: without South Tyrol, Berlusconi would have won the latest parliamentary elections.

Please, please, please leave it to us. Cry
