Yesterday evening, Marlene Svazek (23) was elected the new FPÖ-leader of Salzburg state.

She's the youngest state FPÖ-leader so far and also the only woman.

Anyone else notice her resemblance to the female Ted Cruz lookalike?

On a serious note though, while Waldheim was a horrible being, he was very, err moderated, in outlook and policy when compared to Hofer, not really far from Kohl or Chirac, so the continental Christian-democratic consensus of that time and age. The problem about him was more his past and his lying about the past than his actual policy (not that policy ever mattered when we were electing our President, until the media certainly discovered that that should change this spring) Hofer is obviously one dimension further from the centre.

Exactly.  We're talking about *former* vs *active* here.  And Waldheim in power operated as a mainstream continentalist.

But, like it or not, don't gloat about this being a resounding defeat for the far right; at that margin, it's still a scary hair away from its being a "resounding" *victory* for said forces.  (A comparison that comes to mind is Quebec's 1995 separation referendum)

I would like to keep this perfect example of a Nazi sentiment framed and posted on the wall. We need to know whom we are dealing with.

The 1986 => 2016 trend map by district will be awesome ...

For example, in 1986 Vienna-Neubau voted with 56% for Waldheim, but Hofer only got 19% there.

Which means Neubau was Waldheim+2 in 1986, but VdB+31 now when compared with the national results ... !

On the other hand, Vienna-Simmering voted just 33% Waldheim (-21). But Hofer got 51% (+1).

In general, Vienna's inner-city districts all voted strongly for Waldheim back in 1986 and the outer districts all voted strongly for his SPÖ-opponent.

30 years later, it's the total opposite: VdB got the highest margins in the inner-city districts, while the working-class districts in the South and North had the best Hofer-results.

Think of it as the Viennese version of John Tory vs Doug Ford in 2014's Toronto mayoral election.

Wow, congrats Austria. Facing a bigger threat from immigration than the US, you still chose the sensible path. Wtf is wrong with the US man...

Austria's got fewer "poorly educated" for a Trump to love.  Also, in raw vote numbers, VdB is doing comparably to Hillary (but Austria hasn't got an "Electoral College" system)
