I think Julian Castro may be the best option, he's Hispanic, from a red state, served in Obama's cabinet, young and can appeal to wide swaths of the electorate that Clinton needs

Julian or Joaquin Castro. NM is a gov appointment vacancy; thus forfeiting control of senate. Outside chance Mark Warner is picked over Kaine, populist like Strickland; despite his vote on Fast Track.

Kaine or Warner would be a good choice-although it depends how much the 'progressive' wing of the part feels angered

Kaine voted for fast track, she clearly stated she doesnt want to pick a fight with organized labor.

Julian Castro. Young, hispanic, won't leave an open Senate seat

He even doesn't speak Spanish as far as I know.

I go with either Tim Kaine or Michael Bennett. Both leave an open Senate seat. But it is up to a Dem governor to appoint a successor. And the odds in these states to win again are pretty good.

I go with either Tim Kaine or Michael Bennett.

Incidentally, those happen to be the two names that the Clinton camp leaked were "dominating" the early VP speculation in Hillary world:

How is Jim Webb included over Tim Kaine and Mark Warner?

The likeliest pick may be Julian Castro. He's a protege of a Clinton ally, and it makes sense to pair a political veteran with a rising star, especially a western Hispanic man.

Terry McAuliffe is an old ally, and seems to be doing an okay job as Governor of a major swing state.

Tim Kaine might be the best pick as a swing-state Senator with significant executive experience who has been in the national spotlight.

Michael Bennet may be the best on paper (Western swing-state Senator with education expertise) but he's up for reelection, and he doesn't have much of a national profile.

Party Murray is the best pick but not too likely.

Guy was just elected Governor of Illinois. And then there's that whole hooker scandal.

Plus, his wife tried to steal an election for State's Attorney.

A year ago, when she was bragging that she could "expand the map" (and I actually believed her), I would have honestly said someone like Kaine or even Manchin.  It would have been a rather effective rebound effort for Democrats to gain back some White Southerners.  However, since the 2014 midterms, she's clearly completely abandoned that strategy and is buckling down on the "Obama Coalition" (notice the name of that coalition ... so, we'll see how that works for her) ... so, I'd say a young, non-White progressive.

Alan Grayson doesn't belong in this poll.

I'd say either Castro, though it's risky choosing someone with a lack of experience on the national stage. I think if not them, it will be a fairly young, fairly liberal male Senator. Murphy, Schatz, Heinrich, Booker, and Bennet all fit this criteria.

Here's my dark horse: Ken Salazar.

1. Cory Booker:
The only con is that Christie(if he resigns to get it), Christine Todd Whitman, and LoBiondo would all make it Tilt R, while Tom Kean, Jr. makes it a toss-up.
2. Martin Heinrich:
Only Kelly Fajardo or Sanchez could hold this seat, and I doubt Martinez would be willing to resign to take it.
3. Deval Patrick:
Young, a minority Governor, and leaves no open seat. The major con here is that he's rumored to be pushing for Biden to join.

I think the most likely and best choice is Martin O'Malley. He is progressive, and young enough to be at the forefront of the next generation of Democrats. I also think Joe Manchin would be a good option.

Tim Kaine is the likeliest pick, maybe the best.

Though I think there may be pressure on Clinton to pick Julian Castro, especially if Rubio is the GOP nominee.

A good national candidate is more important than a Senator.

Parties have been willing to take these kinds of risks.

Obama's shortlist included Evan Bayh and Tim Kaine, both of whom would have been replaced by Republicans: Bayh in the Senate, and Kaine in a Governor's seat heading into redistricting.

I was talking about Martin Heinrich whose vacancy will trigger 55 R votes instead of 54, and Dems are better off with 4 seats netting than 5.
