Starting with the smallest major party in the House of Commons.

Even though the NDP caucus declined greatly, the party still won a number of seats they didn't win in 2011 in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and even in Ontario (Essex).

The NDP caucus has 28 incumbents and 16 new MPs.  The caucus is comprised of 26 men and 18 women.  Interestingly, even though the NDP in B.C ran 22 men and 20 women, the gender disparity is entirely the result of the B.C caucus which now has 11 men and only 3 women.  So, outside of B.C, the NDP caucus has complete gender parity at 15 men and 15 women.

In B.C, the disparity between the number of women who ran and the number who actually won, was not mostly a result of the NDP running women in predominately no hope ridings (though there did seem to be some of that, especially in the Southern Fraser Valley) as, in addition to one women incumbent going down to defeat, Jinny Sims, there were quite a number of women the NDP likely expected to win, who ended up  losing including Mira Oreck, Sara Norman and Carol Baird Ellan.

Of the 16 new New Democrats, 9 are women and 7 are men.

There are just 5 visible minorities in the NDP caucus: 2 indigenous Canadians, 1 Chinese, 1 Vietnamese and one Chilean.  An inability to compete among immigrant voters has been a long time problem for the NDP.

My Choice for NDP Shadow Cabinet
1.Prime Minister, Thomas Mulcair, Quebec,
2.Finance, Nathan Cullen, British Columbia
3.Treasury Board, Carol Hughes, Ontario
4.Industry, Brian Masse, Ontario (with reluctance because he is or was practically a communist, or if you don't think that term is appropriate, he, at least, is or was a Dennis Kucinich 'no to any economic development anywhere type')
5.International Trade, Don Davies, British Columbia
6.Renenue, Erin Weir, Saskatchewan
7.Labour, Jenny Kwan, British Columbia
8.Natural Resources, Guy Caron, Quebec
9.Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Quebec
10.Fisheries and Oceans, Fin Donnelly, British Columbia
11.Environment, Linda Duncan, Alberta
12.National Heritage, Pierre Nantel, Quebec
13.Transportation and Infrastructure, David Christopherson, Ontario
14.Government Services and Public Works, Marjorlaine Boutin-Sweet, Quebec
15.Human Resources, Sherri Benson, Saskatchewan
16.Social Development, Irene Mathyssen, Ontario
17.Health, Robert Aubin, Quebec
18.Intergovernmental Affairs and Electoral Reform, Kennedy Stewart, British Columbia
19.Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Romeo Saganash, Quebec
20.Immigration and Citizenship, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Quebec
21.Veterans Affairs, Christine Moore, Quebec
22.Defence, Charlie Angus, Ontario
23.International Development, Niki Ashton, Manitoba
24.Foreign Affairs, Helene Laverdiere, Quebec
25.Solicitor General and Public Safety, Randall Garrison, British Columbia
26.Attorney General and Justice, Murray Rankin, British Columbia
27.House Leader, Peter Julien, British Columbia
Chief Whip, Alexandre Boulerice

Likely and possible leadership candidates should Thomas Mulcair step down
1.Nathan Cullen, British Columbia
2.Erin Weir, Saskatchewan
3.Niki Ashton, Manitoba
4.Charlie Angus, Ontario
5.Pierre Nantel, Quebec (Candidate for Montreal Region)
6.Guy Caron, Quebec

Possible Defeated M.P leadership candidates
1.Craig Scott, Ontario (Candidate for Toronto Region)
2.Megan Leslie, Nova Scotia

On the other hand, should Thomas Mulcair step down, I could see Nathan Cullen as the only M.P and defeated M.P to run for the leadership. I would expect a token left wing challenger to him on the basis that he endorsed in his previous leadership campaign a quasi merger with the Liberals for the 2015 election in the form of their being some joint candidate nomination meetings between the two parties.
However, I would expect that such a token left wing challenger run, that that person would not be an M.P or a defeated M.P (but probably a defeated candidate in this election.)

Nathan Cullen is a good guy. He came in third in the last leadership race running a kind of sleeper campaign. He didn't really have a gimmick and was just a boring Canadian White guy but he was well versed in the issues and had a reputation as hard working MP, so eventually he ended up doing pretty well. Still, given the reason the NDP lost this time, they might want to go with someone more exciting.
