This thread is about politicians that are not part of political families, but have surnames that are misleading. How many can you name?

There's Missouri Governor Jay Nixon (not related to Richard Nixon) and Mark Kennedy, a Republican in Minnesota.

My state's secretary of state is Michele Reagan, who is not related to Ronald Reagan.

One of the congressmen from Massachusetts is Jim McGovern who is not related to George McGovern.

There is also a John F. Kennedy in Georgia's State Senate. He's also a Republican.

Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug LaFollette, who is no relation to fightin' Bob, keeps getting elected even in republican waves presumably because of his last name.

Mark also ran against John in 1996. That must have been a fun campaign. Also, Mark was the first Democrat John ever endorsed last year.

He is actually a distant relative of Fighting Bob. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_La_Follette#Early_life_and_career

The Dem nominee for NV governor last year was a rando named Bob Goodman; no relation to Las Vegas' popular co-mayors Oscar and Carolyn.

The Senate election in Virginia must have been confusing as hell.

John F Kerry was mistaken for John F Kennedy.

John Edwards, 2004 mistaken for  John Bel Edwards, 2016.

In the 2002 Illinois gubernatorial election, the Republican nominee was named Jim Ryan. Although he was of no relation to outgoing Republican Gov. George Ryan (who ended up in prison for corruption), it proved very convenient for Rod Blagojevich to lump Jim in with George in several ads as Blagojevich ran on ethics reform in Springfield and won by a fairly healthy margin in a good Republican year nationwide.

Then Blagojevich himself ended up in the big house.

John W. Davis, Democratic nominee for President in 1924, and Henry G. Davis, Democratic VP nominee in 1904.  Both were from West Virginia.

John Edwards, 2004 mistaken for  John Bel Edwards, 2016.

The more salient point for John Bel is that he doesn't appear to be related to Edwin Edwards.

LOL, this was just ridiculous. And they fail to mention the 7th and most prominent John Kennedy running in 1960.

Note that there was a John F Kennedy elected Massachusetts State Treasurer. He was a high school drop out who spent $200 on his campaign.

Best one I remember was Jack E. Robinson.

Were any of you living in Massachusetts in the fall of 2000 when he was the GOP candidate for US Senator?  I was.  Jack E. Robinson was the Republican candidate.  Short black dude.  Played in Jaws as an extra back in 1975.  How sorry was the Massachusetts Republican party?  The entrenched alcoholic US senator Ted Kennedy (D) and gun-nut Carla Howell (L) were the main competitors.  Jack E. Robinson got about 12% of the popular vote that year, and most of it was misguided name recognition.

In the 2003 California recall election, there was
Democrat Edward Kennedy in 24th place with 0.03%
Michael Jackson (Republican) in 91st place with 0.01%.
Republican Robert Dole in 132nd place with less than 0.01%

Only 3 out of 135 people on the ballot did worse than Bob Dole.
