Quidi Vidi is my second favorite riding name (or partial riding name in this case) after Tobique-Mactaquak.  Name a riding Mactaquak?  You must be either Qua(c)kers of Quidi(ng) me!

Talking of Quidi Vidi, NDP now leads there (as in St Johns. Centre).

PC leads:
Cape St. Francis
Conception Bay East - Bell Island
Topsail - Paradise
Mount Pearl North
Ferryland
Exploits
Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune

I'm actually pleasantly surprised that after all that has happened the NL NDP managed to re-elect its two incumbents and came close in a couple of others...and so much for all those predictions of the Liberals winning every single seat - they actually lost in 10 of them - not even close!

That's honestly the highest vote percent I've ever seen in a contested election in Canada. I wonder if it sets a record for a provincial election, or a least a record since the 1800s or something. About the only free and fair votes I've seen anywhere that beat that are the referendums in Gibraltar and the Falklands on staying in the UK.

Liberals got 96% in a duel in a by-election in 1979, but, on general elections, they never got more than 92%.

Higher than D'Arcy-McGee. Wow.  I suppose both the NDP and PC candidates there were paper candidates from away?

Its worth noting that just two elections ago in Newfoundland it was the PCs who won almost every seat and the reduced the Liberals to 3 seats. in fact some of those ridings that went over 90% Liberal were PC held just a few years ago.

The NDP had three paper candidates in this election, but the one in that riding was not one of them.  While the former Mayor of Wabush, Ron Barron, had the 3rd highest share of the vote for the NDP in his more urban Labrador riding, two of their three paper candidates ran in rural Labrador.

The only previous election result that I recall that produced similar numbers was the byelection in Athabasca Saskatchewan held when the MLA Buckley Belanger resigned to run again after switching parties from the Provincial Liberals to the NDP.

Well, one: Torngat Mountains (Liberal candidate: Danny Dumaresque Tongue). The other two went Liberal in 2007.

I'd be surprised if they appointed as speaker someone who recently switched parties creating a lot of acrimony and hate...usually the speaker is someone viewed as more non-partisan who is well liked in all parties...

French coverage of the election said he lost investiture races in 6 ridings before being selected in Conception Bay.
