IMO yes. If I'm accused of something I don't want to use money to get a lawyer because I don't like to spend money on things. My view is that anyone can use a public defender if they want with the option being that you represent yourself, get a PD or hire a private lawyer.

I was kind of shocked when I learned on This Week Tonight a couple of weeks ago that most states make it really hard to use public defeneders and then make you pay out the nose for it if you do go down the road.  I knewassumed that they generally sucked, but that part was new to me. 

That's not what TV and Movies have lead us to believe how it works.  I know, I'm shocked too.  Hollywood lied to us!  Next thing you're going to tell me is that cars don't blow up when you shoot them....what, they don't?  Even in the gas tank?  They don't?  WHOA!  Is stalking ok if you're attractive?  Oh good, whew.  At least they got something right.
