This is as true a statement as any.

Look, I'll be the first to admit, I'm what would be considered an "establishment" Republican. I have my candidate of choice, Rubio, as of now...but if we nominated Christie or Bush or Kasich or whoever, I'd get behind them. In other words, even if I wanted Reagan in 1976, I would have been solidly behind Ford once he won the nomination. Yes, the Republican Party has slid to the right pretty much since 2006. I noticed it when I found myself arguing with fellow Republicans about George W. Bush and hearing them whine about him on talk radio only 18 months after supporting his re-election as if the future of our planet depended on it.

But that pales in comparison....PALES in comparison...to how extreme far left the Democratic Party has moved.

Look at this article for God's sake:

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1996/news/9609/16/clinton.speech/index.shtml

Sept 16, 1996: President Bill Clinton picked up the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest police organization.

"You do not have to put up with an unacceptable rate of crime and violence," Clinton declared, flanked by police officers.

The president said that anti-crime efforts are moving in the right direction, citing legislation providing for 100,000 new police officers on the street, tougher penalties for repeat offenders, the Violence Against Women Act, an expanded death penalty, and gun control laws.

"We proposed the largest anti-drug effort in history, and I hope that Congress will give us the extra $700 million we asked for so that we can do everything possible to really effectively turn these trends around and make sure that we have drug use going down, not just among adults, which it is...but (also) among children. We can't have these kids out there believing they are not in danger when they are."

With four more years, the president promised to "break the gangs, ban those cop-killer bullets, (impose) drug testing from parolees, improve the opportunities for community-based strategies to lower crime, and give our children something to say 'yes' to."

NOW YOU TELL ME...does that sound like ANYTHING Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders would say today?

Aside from the fact that Clinton is well known for having been on the right of the Democratic Party, police pandering is not the one and only issue defining the left-right spectrum.

A fact isn't left wing nor right wing.  A fact isn't capitalist nor communist.  It is just a fact.  Stupid mandatory minimums for nonviolent crimes decimate minority neighborhoods and waste tax payer money.  Thankfully regardless of political affiliation the majority of people in Washington are beginning to see the light.  Hop in your Delorean and go back to the 80s.

For years, I've had to point out how The Democratic Party =/= Socialism to my conservative friends. I've had to defend Liberalism as being different from Socialism/Communism, and I feel it is. But Bernie really is making the Democratic Party look Socialist. He's confirming every long-held right wing conspiracy about Liberalism in general (IE that "Liberalism is just Hidden Socialism"). He's a joke who unfortunately has a lot of supporters, and is making my party look like the party of far left Occupy Wallstreet loonies. I can sympathize with how lifelong Democrats in 1972 must have felt.

1972 is over, LBJRevivalist/DevotedDemocrat/Dazey, and you aren't Harry Angstrom. This Puritan Olf Leftist in counter-cultural Babylon act of yours was never amusing, and is now staler than you can possibly imagine.

The McGovern campaign, despite tanking the election, did tremendous long-term good for the Democratic Party. For the first time, the party represented not corrupt city bosses but actual progressives-people who thought war wasn't the answer and that all people should be equal in society.  You repeatedly demonize these people as "SJW's" or "loonies," but they have been the cornerstone of the party base ever since, and will remain so for the indefinite future-perhaps even the rest of your natural life. Would you rather the bigoted George Meany influence party policies or the actual workers marching against austerity?

I don't know why you prefer a system of corrupt party bosses unaccountable to their very voters, but I certainly don't. The real issue is that you are very reactionary, and you seemingly long for a world where the 60s movements liberalizing conditions for women and racial minorities never happened. Well, guess what? They did and it's permanent. And America is a better place from it. But given your comment under your last sock that you couldn't care less about Serbs killed by NATO, I can't really expect anything better from you. Your liberalism seems more of some kind of family tradition than genuine concern or others.
