What's in Marion County that made it vote for Conway while all neighboring counties went to Bevin, some by really large margins?

In reality, this is a red state, so what exactly is so remarkable about Republicans winning? Someone explain that to me.

All the GOP now has to do is to pick of MO (a bit hard but likely), VW (likely) and VA (depends on who is the Presidential party in 2017) while keeping NC, then by 2017 the GOP will be in control over every Southern (CSA + VW + KY + MO + OK) Governorship, something the Dems achieved on a regular basis in the 1930s-1960s.  What a dramatic shift.

That county has always been oddly Democratic for the region.

The GOP well may sweep the board in the statewide offices.  But even if they do, it's far too early to write off Kentucky Democrats.

In reality, this is a red state, so what exactly is so remarkable about Republicans winning? Someone explain that to me.
Nothing, except that it leans slightly blue at the state level.

This.

I met with local progressives after last year's "election", had dinner with them, and they promised action. But there was no follow-through. Not one blasted bit.

Thank you old friend.

From my extrapolation of the trends Beshear is finished and Grimes is likely toast. God, I am good at this.

Ernie Fletcher set the GOP back a decade or two.  But even that affect is wearing off.

Since 1972 Kentucky has had only 1 Republican governor and he only lasted 1 term.

AP called it for Bevin. Sad  I think we can say with some certainty that campaign polling as we know it is dead.

Well Kentucky, you've made your bed; now you have to lay in it.  Get ready for four years of a completely incompetent fool as your governor, discrediting your state every chance he has.  Once Obama is gone and not destroying the coal industry, you'll be sorry you did this.

I am very well aware of the history, thanks. I'm just making a point that Republicans winning in a Republican state isn't shocking.

It's kind of odd.  Demographically, the county is pretty much on par with the statewide average.  Median Household Income is slightly lower (as you'd probably expect for a rural county), but so is the percentage of people in poverty.

I thought that  Bevin would win but by a very narrow margin.  Did not expect this scale of victory. Wow.
